Lawrence Arundel Obituary

Clay Arundel (Maj. USAF Retired)

SHREVEPORT, LA - Major Lawrence Clayton Arundel, USAF (Ret.) passed into eternal peace on January 1st, 2010 after a lengthy battle with lung cancer. He was 77.

Dad was a career military officer with the elite achievement of being a navigator on the B-58 Hustler, the world's first supersonic bomber. Only 350 men served on the 116 planes manufactured. He also faithfully served as crew member on both the B-47 Stratojet and the B-52 Stratofortress (aka BUFF as he called it).

Upon retirement from the Air Force at Barksdale AFB he started a new career as a real estate agent and broker in the Shreveport area for an additional 30 years.

His later life was spent pursuing his passion, golf. He also faithfully volunteered as tournament director at Querbes Golf Course for several years. During that period he also volunteered as mentor to many and as newsletter publisher for the Highland Club in Shreveport, LA. He touched many lives at the Highland Club and many members there touched his life.

He is preceded in death by his father; L.V. Arundel, and mother; Gladys Arundel.

He is survived by four children (Phillip, Adrienne (wife of Chris Remedies), Kevin, and Scot), five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Pursuant to his request there will be no memorial service. However the family will be holding a wake at The Highland Club on Thursday, January 7th, 2010 from 2 to 4 PM for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial donations be made in his name to one of the following: The Highland Club, 1711 Tulane Street, Shreveport, LA 71103 or Hospice of Louisiana, In Memory of Lawrence Arundel, Willis-Knighton Medical Center, P.O. Box 32600, Shreveport, LA 71130-2600.

A special thanks goes out to a few exceptional individuals for care in his final months and weeks, Charlotte Matthew (who also took great care with our grandmother), and Carol Humphries from Willis-Knighton Hospice. Centuries Memorial

Philip, Adrienne, Kevin, and Scotty,

We are so sorry to hear of Uncle Clay's passing.. It has been sometime since we had seen him but I will always remember the trip our 2 families took to the Grand Canyon... You were all in your station wagon and we were in the RV.. Our Dad's had a true experience with the bathroom issue in the RV.. I am sure they are causing a ruckus together again.. Our prayers and thoughts are always with you especially at this sad and difficult time... Please let us know if there is anything we can do.. Love Michelle, Rodney, and RJ Martin

Friends, and fellow service members,

You all made a special place in Dad's life.

His times at the Highland Club and his military service were the source of many great stories he told me.

I remember the B-58 stories and the off the wall warnings from the on board warning system as well as the bad stories of his service in Nam.

And I do know that all of you played a special part in his life.

Especially to all of you in the B-58 Hustler Association. I have several pictures of the Hustler in my house. He really loved those days and all of the good times with you guys.

I heard a lot of stories, but BJ Brown, the ones that stand out are of you and him fishing on the White River in Mountain Home during his retirement.

Thank you all for making a difference in my father's life.

RIP Dad.

Your son, Scot

I miss you Clay.........I was sitting on the porch Sunday after one of your sons called to tell me of your passing. I was looking at the white rose bush you helped me plant in honor of my Dad, one of your golfing buddies. Thinking of you and all the fun we had. I miss you. Remember, no more fat jokes wherever you are!

Dear Arundel Family,
Clay will be missed at the B-58 reunion. As a DSO at Grissom, I spent many hours on alert with Clay . A great Air Force buddy. God Bless you all.

Phillip, Adrienne, Scot & Kevin:
It was a priviledge to be able to call your Dad my friend for all these years. He was always ready with his quick wit, his gentle heart, and "let's go eat at George's". He was "precious" and will be greatly missed.

To the Arundel Family, I also wqas a Pilot in the B-58. I flew with Clay a few times(might have been in the B-52),and found him to be a true Professional.
Please accept my sympathies.

To Clay's family,
Clay was a wonderful character and we were so happy to see him at the last B-58 Reunion.
We shared a driveway at Bunker Hill and we will never forget when Clay knocked on our door very early one July morning asking for coffee for he and his crew at the time, Noonan and Leatherbarrow, were "getting their stories straight" about the B-58 crash they had been through after going off the runway on landing. We did not believe him at first until he pointed the smoke. Even in this stressful period he was funny. Of course Clay was back in the second station of the B-58 shortly after this and continued to be a true professional.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We are all going to miss him.

Dear friends, I was a Pilot in the B-58 and although I did not fly with Clay, I knew him well from sitting alert, mission planning, flying Operational Readiness Inspection sorties, parties and just friends hanging around. Clay was a Proud Professional who did his job well. God Bless and rest in Peace!

To The Family of Clay,

Clay took care of our house for us for many years. I never had to worry about it and after my husband died he continued even when he did not feel like doing it and I missed him. He was a very caring man.

I'm sorry for your loss. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

It was always so good to see Clay, and to be kissed on the cheek by him. I had many suppers at Piccadilly with him and others after a meeting at the Highland Club. We had some good laughs, and he was there when I had tears, as well.
I will be forever grateful to my God for allowing our paths to cross.

Dear Arundel Family ~ I had the great pleasure of knowing Clay at The Highland Club many years ago and unfortunately the past couple of years at the chemo center while tending to my dad. I wish you all peace throughout the next couple of days and the months following --- it's tough! Your father was one of the kindest men I've ever known.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Lawrence Clayton Arundel our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Larry. And to Larry it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during the Korean and Vietnam Wars while serving in the U.S. Air Force. Larry, we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,341 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Larry’s family and loved ones.
