Marjorie Porterfield Obituary

Marjorie Blalock Porterfield

SHREVEPORT, LA - Marjorie Blalock Porterfield entered into Heaven on December 16, 2008, to enjoy eternal life with her Lord, her parents, 3 siblings, husband and son. She had Alzheimer's disease for several years prior to being diagnosed with lung cancer. Alzheimer's served as a blessing because it protected her from the painful realities of aging and death. Although Mom's memory was taken from her, Alzheimer's never interfered with her joyous spirit and sense of humor. She continued to read, sing, laugh and dance into the sunset of her life.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home, 7849 East Kings Hwy (near LSU-S), where the family will receive friends from 10:00am til 10:30am, Saturday, December, 20, 2008. A celebration of her life will take place at 10:30am to share our favorite stories about Mom. Casual dress encouraged; refreshments afterwards.

Our precious mother was born in Moore County, North Carolina on February 27, 1924. After completing high school she went to work in Washington, DC. It was there she met our late father to whom she was married for fifty years prior to his death. Mom was a devoted military wife who moved 17 times during their first 17 years of marriage and never complained. She raised 3 children alone at times when Dad was serving our country in the military overseas. Although she was employed outside of the home when we were older, Mom was always involved in our school activities, hobbies, and recreation. At the age of 53, Mother decided to go to nursing school, and later worked as an LPN for approximately 15 years. After she retired she devoted herself to caring for our late father, Capt. James W. Porterfield, Jr. (US Army Ret'd) and our late brother, Paul Porterfield, throughout their lengthy illnesses. Our mother was a dedicated Christian woman who extended hospitality to family, friends, and strangers alike. She was our exhorter, our mentor, and the heart of our family. Mother had a will of iron balanced by a keen sense of wisdom and a soft heart. The blessing of her unique legacy will continue to live in our hearts (her surviving children; Woody and Jenny; her only grandchild, Jason; and special "family friend/daughter", Lenona Birdwell). We thank the staff at The Terrace Assisted Living facility, Mother's physician, Dr. Jeffrey Bernard, and special nurse Margie Andrus, R.N., for their compassion and care of our mother.

Jenny--Sorry to read of your mom's
passing and of Paul's as well.
I think of you and hope you are doing well. It seems so recently that I saw Paul at the grocery store...but time passes far more quickly these days.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Mrs. Marjorie Blalock Porterfield a loving military wife who provided dedicate service to her country and her family. To her family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Mrs. Porterfield. And to Mrs. Porterfield it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank her for her devotion to her husband, her family and her country. Only a military wife knows the difficulties and great sacrifices associated with raising a military family that relocated frequently and that often included long separations from the one they loved most and anxious moments of concern for their safety. Mrs. Porterfield we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Mrs. Porterfield’s family and loved ones.
