Catherine T. Raleigh, 94 passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday October 30 in East Aurora, NY. Catherine was born in 1926 in Brooklyn, NY to William and Catherine Gibbons. She was the second of seven children and attended St. Patrick's School, Fort Hamilton High School and Pratt Institute. Catherine married James Raleigh of Brooklyn and together they raised six children in Sunnyside on Renwick Avenue. While raising her children she attended Richmond College and earned a Master's Degree in Education. She was an elementary school teacher in the NYC school system for over 25 years working at PS 18 and PS 60. Upon retirement Catherine enjoyed travelling with her friends and siblings whether it was to Europe, Florida, or California she was eager to see the world. One of her highlights of travel was flying to Europe on the Concorde and returning on the cruise ship the QE2. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, spending countless hours with her family, never missing a birthday or graduation and always there to celebrate their achievements. She enjoyed camping in the Adirondacks with her children and grandchildren. She was a devout Catholic attending St Teresa's Church and St. Nicholas Chapel. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband James, sisters Mary, Nancy and Jeannie and her brothers William and Jack. She is survived by her children Kathleen (Carol), James (Elizabeth), Michael (Barbara), Maureen Raleigh-Greer (Charles), Daniel (Jeanne), Dolores Desch (Kenneth), her sister Christina Burchik (Steve), ten grandchildren Michael, Kevin, Brendan, Danielle, Erin, Sean, Brian, Jennifer, Melissa, Christopher, several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the caregivers who helped care for mom including Brittany, Lynda and Debbie as well as Buffalo Hospice. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, November 11 from 4:00pm - 8pm at Casey Funeral Home, 350 Slosson Ave., Staten Island, NY 10314. The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 12 at 10:45am at St Teresa's Church, 1634 Victory Blvd, Staten Island, NY 10314, followed by interment at St Peter's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Buffalo Hospice: Hospice Foundation P.O. Box 590 Buffalo, NY 14240-0590.
