Edmund R. Cunningham

1934 - 2021

Edmund R. Cunningham, 87, a 20-year resident of Forked River, NJ, passed away on December 1, 2021 at AristaCare Manchester, Manchester, NJ. Ed was born on Staten Island in 1934, the youngest of nine children of the late Joseph and Honora (Farraher) Cunningham. Ed served in the United States Marine Corps as a mechanic between October 1952 to October 1958 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Camp Pendleton, California, and Quantico, Virginia, and rose to the rank of Sergeant, before returning to Staten Island, NY. Ed worked as a mechanic at several gas stations on Staten Island through the years, as well as a driver for the Sandy Hook Pilots association before retiring in the early 2000s to Forked River, NJ. Ed is survived by his wife of 44 years, Joan, his stepdaughter, Doreen Padovani (Chris), step-grandchildren Michael Padovani, Christine Funk (Dave), Danielle Padovani (Tim Grochowski), and step-great-grandchildren Alice, Mary and Wendy Padovani and Sophia and Raelynn Funk, his sister-in-law Alice Jacobsen and brother-in-law Frank Schneider, Jr. Ed is also survived by his children of his first marriage: Theresa Cunningham, Nora Frey (Franz), Judi Cunningham, Joe (Sandra) Cunningham, Frank (Irene) Cunningham, Susan Kelly, Geraldine McColgan (Kevin), and Thomas (Deborah) Cunningham, and his grandchildren Amanda McNary (Adam), Laura Fuls, Alison Marras (Demetri), Kristen Cunningham, Martin Cunningham, Maya Cunningham, Michael Kelly (Caroline Verboys), Arlene Kelly (Craig Mende), Nolan Kelly, Owen Kelly, Sean (Meng) McColgan, Kathryn Sprague (Ryan), Thomas Cunningham, Jr., Joseph (Severine) Cunningham, and Katherine Cunningham. And his great-grandchildren: Fiona Duffy, Sophia Eldridge, Silas Eldridge, Seth McNary, Irene Marras, Maeve Mende, Rory Mende, Marlene McColgan, and Liam Cunningham. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Ed was predeceased by his first wife, Arlene Woznack Cunningham, his parents Joseph and Honora Cunningham, his brothers Bill (Frances), Frank (Joan), Joe (Dottie), George (Nan), and his sisters Helen Burns (Clancy), Margaret Lynch (Charles), Mary Drury (Thomas), and Gwendolyn Nellis (Walter), and stepson Frank John Scaglione. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there was no wake. Interment was at St. Peter's Cemetery, Staten Island, NY 10310, on Saturday, December 4, 2021.
