Filomena Whalen

Long time Staten Island resident Filomena (Phyllis) Whalen, 92, of Sunnyside, a devoted daughter, mother, sister, and aunt, passed away peacefully this past Friday, 14 January 2022 at Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel, New Jersey. Born Filomena Siano on18 April 1929 to Frank and Lucy Siano, Phyllis was a lifelong Staten Islander until recently moving to Monmouth County NJ with her sister. Phyllis was an alumna of McKee High School. She worked in administrative roles in banking and in insurance throughout her life, spending the last 10 years of her career with John Hancock on Staten Island. Phyllis and her husband Louis Whalen, a WWII veteran, where married in October 1955. In 1961 they welcomed their daughter Cindy Whalen. Cindy was born with special needs and Phyllis devoted her life to caring for and spending time with her daughter, the two were inseparable. Everyone who knew her or had the good fortune to be in contact with Phyllis, were always touched by her kindness, devotion to family, warmth, and generosity. Surviving Phyllis is her daughter, Cindy Whalen, her sisters; Frances Sappio of New Jersey and Diana Siano of Connecticut, a niece Stephanie Corrado of New Jersey, and a nephew, Robert Sappio of New Jersey. A viewing will be held on Friday 21 January 2022 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Casey Funeral Home, 350 Slosson Ave, Staten Island NY 10314 (718) 447-4242. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday 22 January 2022 9.30 am at Saint Teresa's Church 1634 Victory Blvd Staten Island NY 10314.
