Hugh M. Withers III

1951 - 2022

Navy veteran, worked 39 years with the Coast Guard, loving family man Hugh M. Withers III, 71, passed away peacefully at home on December 10, 2022. He is survived by his wife Lillian Withers (nee Amirati), his daughter Karen Bennett (nee Withers), his son Hugh Withers Jr, and his grandson James Robert. He is also survived by beloved sisters and brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Hugh was born on February 17, 1951, to Hugh and Janet Withers. He and his older sister, Beth, were raised in the Yorkville section of Manhattan. As a teenager, Hugh attended Aviation High School in Queens, NY. He met his future wife, Lillian, who was a cheerleader at a school basketball game. They became high school sweethearts and married not long after. They were married for 52 years. Hugh proudly served in the US Navy from 1969 – 1973. He made his career with the Coast Guard where he worked as a civilian for 39 years, retiring in 2009. Hugh served as a member of the SI Little League Board of Directors for many years. He was a member of the Seaver Avenue Men's Club, where he made lifelong friendships. In Hugh's leisure time, he enjoyed watching the Mets and Jets. He enjoyed fishing with his Uncle Jim on Montauk Point, trips to his Poconos house, laughing with his friends at Lee's Tavern, Joyce's, and Manor House. He loved to cook, much to the joy of his wife and family. In retirement, he and his wife travelled, took walks on the boardwalk, and enjoyed their home and family. Their 50th Anniversary fell during lockdown, so they celebrated with hot dogs at Skippy's hot dog stand. Hugh was a wonderful husband, father, and friend. He left us too soon and will be sorely missed by all. Services will be held at Colonial Funeral Home, 2819 Hylan Blvd 10306. Viewings will be held on Wednesday 12/14 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. Internment on Thursday 12/15 at 12:30 PM at St. Peter's Cemetery 52 Tyler Ave 10310.
