James "Chubby" Hansen

1933 - 2022

James "Chubby" Hansen, a former Staten Islander and Wall Street executive, died at his home in Hollywood, Florida on February 16, 2022 at the age of 89. Jim was born on January 3, 1933 and raised in West Brighton. He lived on Staten Island most of his adult life until he retired in 1990. He then moved to the Poconos with his wife Anne, spending their winter months in Florida. Jim attended Curtis High School and played both baseball and basketball while there. He eventually earned a Bachelor of Science degree from St. John's University, graduating Summa Cum Laude. His 40-year working career included store manager for Acme Supermarkets, office manager for John Hancock Life Insurance Co., and finally retiring as Vice President of Stock Loan for Goldman Sachs. Jim always had a passion for sports and was quite active in the Island's sports leagues in the late 1940s. In 1947 and 1948 he played for the Tompkinsville Blue Jays baseball team winning state titles both years. He finished the 1947 season with a .467 batting average. That same year, playing basketball for the Daily Mirror New York Post basketball league, he scored 55 points in a single game, a league record at the time. His passion for sports continued even after marriage where he could often be found playing stickball at P.S. 49 in Stapleton or bowling at the Knights of Columbus lanes on Manor Road. In his later years, he was an avid golfer. Jim's greatest passion in life, however, was his family. In many ways he was the patriarch of the family and devoted his life to them. He was always there for advice and assistance when called upon and was the first to pick up the phone to ask if you were alright or if you needed anything. He loved having his children, grandchildren, and extended family to his home in the Poconos. Many fond memories were made there skiing, ice skating, hanging out in his game room, or just sitting by the fireplace. He was a very giving, caring, and generous man to his family and genuinely loved them very much. His entire family was blessed to have had him in their lives. He will be sorely missed. Jim is survived by his two sons, James (Gloria) Hansen and Ronald (Patricia) Hansen, his sister Jacqueline Tobin, 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jim was predeceased by his wife, Anne Hansen (nee Gargano), his parents, Katherine and James Hansen, and his daughter, Lynelle Hansen Duckenfield. A memorial will be held at St. Joseph – St. Thomas Church on April 2, 2022 at 11:15am. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
