Beloved brother & uncle, active in charities, 'an exceptional man' Joseph Edward Gilroy Jr. , 65, passed away suddenly in the early hours on November 11th 2021. He was born in Rosebank and raised in Dongan Hills. He is survived by his sister Judy Gilroy Valitutto, her husband John, his nephew Michael J. Byrne, wife Dana, their children, Sophia and Brandon, his niece, Jennalyn G. Valitutto, as well as his Longtime Love, Julie DeStefano. Joe held multiple banking positions in his career which spanned 50 years. He was a 2013 recipient of Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame "Unsung Heroes" award. He was very involved with many local not-for-profit associations which include the March of Dimes, Staten Island Heart Society, and Steven Siller Tunnel to Towers. We could continue to list his achievements and his involvements, however, that would take up the whole paper. He was very passionate about his boats, cars, and his tools. He thoroughly looked forward to his family vacation in Maine every summer, as well as his trips to New Port Richey, Florida. He was an exceptional man who was always there for anyone who needed him. He will be greatly missed by all. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Tunnel to Towers as well as the Staten Island Heart Society will be accepted. Viewings will be held at Casey's Funeral home on Monday and Tuesday 3 - 7 p.m. The funeral will take place at St. Ann's Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Casey Funeral Home 350 Slosson Ave Staten Island, NY 10314 (718) 447-4242

Goodbye, Joey. Until we meet again. You were definitely your Fathers son. You learned your mechanical skills from a master. I am proud to be your cousin. It took me awhile to work through my shock and sorrow to write this.

My sincere condolences to the family. Joe was an incredible human being full of kindness. He was always ready to help anyone in need and his sense of humor was always present. The world has lost a great human being far too early. I will never forget my cousin and the kindness he showed my mother in her waning days of dementia.

Joe was a dear Friend to all who knew him. You felt like you had his undivided attention even in the midst of many. He was a gentle giant who gave the best bear hugs. His quick & steady smile made you feel connected. The kindness of this man was endless and his thoughtfulness boundless. Joe lived his life as a devout Christian and true gentleman. He was 100% genuine. It has been an honor & a privilege to be in his company. Rest In Peace dear Friend. Always in our hearts.

Joe has been my friend since 1972. We both graduated from St Peters HS and remained close friends and business associates. My wife Jeanne and I were deeply saddened and shocked at being told of his sudden passing. We will always be fond of him and his legacy. He was always a bright beacon even in the most difficult times. If God were to only return half of the kindness and generosity you have given us you'll be the richest man in Heaven. I'll miss you buddy!!!

So sorry to hear of Joe's loss! I worked for Santander security and was stationed in Pennsylvania. Joe was always a great help when I worked on New York City cases. He was so kind to allow myself and my wife, Judy, to stay in New Port Richey. We had retired and we're looking for a home in Florida. He was so kind, intelligent and respected by all his peers.

An exceptional man indeed. RIP Joe. I´ll never forget what an absolute joy it was to work with you during some memorable years at Santander. Nobody worked harder, personified teamwork and made us remember to smile more than you. Condolences to the Gilroy family.

We have lost a great and compassionate man, friend, human being. Joe was always a "Giver" to all who needed a helping hand. The world is a darker, sadder place without Joe, but we can share solace in knowing our dear friend is resting comfortably in the hands of God. He will always be in our hearts and I will always remember his brilliant smile and bellowing laugh and his kindness to all. Rest in Peace Joe.
