Mary Veronica Sweeney

1932 - 2023

Beloved grandmother and great-grandmother Mary "Maureen" Veronica (McCartan) Sweeney passed away peacefully at Eger Nursing Home on Saturday, March 25th. Born April 23, 1932 in West Brighton to James and MaryJane (Minnie) McCartan, Maureen graduated from Port Richmond High School in 1949 and worked in Manhattan until the birth of her first child in 1954. She returned to the workforce in 1968 working for the New York Telephone Company for 20 years before her retirement. Maureen loved a good time and was a true social butterfly. Whether it was dancing the Lindy, meeting with the "Club" of 7 fellow Port Richmond HS friends, basking in the summer sun at the South Shore Swim Club, or meeting her best friend, "Delor" for a donut and coffee, she enjoyed it all. Her greatest love of all though was spending time with her 12 grandchildren. They were truly the loves of her life. Attending all the important events of their lives was her joy and her greatest pleasure. Maureen was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Annabelle Gootee, her husband, Edward Sweeney, and her son, Kevin Sweeney. Surviving are her sons, Brian and Edward Sweeney, daughters Sharon Sweeney and Maureen Marcus, and daughters in law Krista, Lisa, and Laura Sweeney. Her beloved grandchildren are Emily and Andrew Scamporino, Joshua and Meghan Medeiros, Megan and Anthony Caccese, Ashley and Nick Dorata, Kelly and Richie Curylo, Brian Sweeney, Brooke Sweeney, Kevin Sweeney, Alexander Marcus, Ryan Sweeney, Tara Sweeney, and Vincent DeLuca. Maureen's ten great grandchildren include Madeline, James, and Charlotte Dorata, McKenna Caccese, Mia and Barrett Medeiros, Jillian, Christian, and Nicholas Curylo, and Damian DeLuca. Visitors will be received at Hanley's Funeral Home, 60 New Dorp Lane, Staten Island, NY on Thursday, March 30th from 4:30-8pm A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10am on Friday, March 31st at St Joseph's Church, 34 Yorktown Road, Hillsborough NJ, with burial to follow in St Peter's Cemetery, Staten Island, NY.
