Mildred Wangler Obituary

Tireless volunteer, lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church Mildred E. Wangler died November 15, 2020 at Clove Lakes Rehabilitation Center. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 14, 2022 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Cherubini – McInerny Funeral Home, 1289 Forest Ave, Staten Island, NY. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, October 15, 2022 - 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church – 216 Jewett Ave., Staten Island, NY. Mrs. Wangler, a native Staten Islander, was born July 1, 1919. With the exception of two years immediately following her 1947 marriage, she lived 99 of her 101 years on Staten Island. Born to German immigrants, her parents, along with others of that community, built St. John's Lutheran Church, where she became a lifelong member. A 1938 graduate of Port Richmond High School, "Millie" went on to Drake Business School where she pursued additional training in advanced secretarial studies. Her early employment capitalized on that training but it was her return to work after a 12-year hiatus raising a family where she achieved success in the steamship industry. Starting out as an entry level clerk, her drive and ambition positioned her to take advantage of promotional opportunities culminating her 30-year career heading her department as "Inward Freight Manager". In retirement, after a brief stint as full-time grandma, helping with pick-ups and homework. Millie, anxious to get back to work, was employed 15 years as a part-time administrative assistant at St. Vincent's School of Nursing. Although this became the end of her employment, it did not end her association with St. Vincent's Medical Center which had become Richmond University Medical Center. She volunteered in the Human Resources Department well into her 90's clocking thousands of hours. Recognizing her service, the United Hospital Fund awarded her the "Hospital and Volunteer Achievement Award" during a ceremony in Manhattan, March 2010. Mildred Wangler, daughter of Ludwig and Amilda Voigt, was the loving wife of Stephen F. Wangler for 37 years. Sadly, he died in 1984. Introduced through friends, this WWII veteran, who served in the Pacific Theatre married Millie in 1947. She was the mother of 2 daughters: Lynda Konecny and Denise Bilezikjian; grandmother of three: Lisa Konecny, Erin Johnson (Bilezikjian) and Stephen Bilezikjian. She was blessed to have four great-grandchildren: Henry, Hazel and Ellery Johnson and Thomas Bilezikjian. Donations can be made in Mildred's name to her beloved church: St. John's Lutheran Church at the church office address: 663 Manor Road, Staten Island, NY 10314.

Millie was a remarkable lady! Quick with the wit and honesty during St. John's Lutheran events and services, she was very friendly and sweet to my son, Ian, always asking about him and even making a video for me to wish him well as he moved away. Millie, my mom, and Flo will always be best of friends. I would have attended the memorial for this one-of-a-kind lady, if I had known about it. Celebrating & remembering her life and personality with love and fondness.
