Nicholas Joseph Mezzacappa passed away on Saturday, June 4, 2022 in Charlotte, North Carolina while visiting family. He was born in March 1943, to Domenico and Giovanna Mezzacappa in Monacilioni, Italy. He immigrated to Buenos Aires, Argentina with his family before coming to the United States in 1964. Nicholas served in the United States Army as an instructor at Fort Belvoir, Virginia from 1965 to 1967. He then worked in various car dealerships throughout New Jersey and Staten Island; until he began employment at the NYC Transit Authority in 1971. Nicholas repaired, painted and preserved subway cars, as a (Railway) Car Maintainer and was assigned to work in many subway depots throughout NYC for 26 years. Upon his retirement from the MTA, Nicholas began his own house painting and wallpaper business for several years in Staten Island. In 1971, Nicholas married RoseAnn Montalbano and they settled in Grant City to raise their family, where he still resided until his death. Mr. Mezzacappa loved all sports. He bowled in Staten Island Leagues for many years, as well as played tennis and racquetball. He played, coached and refereed soccer leagues on Staten Island. He was also an avid NY Yankee and NY Giant fan and a constant spectator of all sports; which he enjoyed with his son, Steven and grandsons, Nick and Paul. In his retirement, he spent most of his time with his grandchildren and became an excellent cook. He would spend hours looking through cookbooks and creating delicious soups, sauces and dinners. Nicholas is survived by RoseAnn, his wife of 51 years; his son, Steven and his wife, Melissa; a daughter, Nicole and 4 grandchildren: Nicholas, Elena, Scarlett and Paul. He is also survived by his sister, Maria Torre and his brother, Florindo Mezzacappa. Nicholas was predeceased by his sister, Angela Mezzacappa and survived by his brother in law and sister in law, Joseph and Patricia Montalbano, as well as many nieces and nephews. His wife, RoseAnn shared, "My husband was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was always willing to help anyone at any time and showed a quiet strength no matter the situation. Our lives will not be the same without him." A viewing will be held on Sunday, June 12, 2022 in Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp, from 2PM to 6PM. The funeral mass will be Monday, June 13, 2022 in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Huguenot.
