Captain Thomas K. Newman Staten Island native, Vietnam veteran and Sandy Hook Pilot Captain Thomas K. Newman, 72, Sandy Hook Pilot, November 29, 1949 - August 29, 2021 of Spring Lake Heights, NJ, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family after a four year battle with cancer. Thomas K. Newman, known to family and friends as 'Uncle Buck,' was born in 1949 in Castelton Corners area of Staten Island, New York to Thomas and Janet Newman. He was a graduate of St. Rita's grammar school, Port Richmond High School and a member of the inaugural swim team and varsity baseball team. He was a letter earner of both. A patriot and a veteran of the United States Coast Guard, Tom served during the Vietnam War from 1968-1970. His love of the sea led him to a devoted career as a Sandy Hook Pilot after being honorably discharged from the Coast Guard. He began as an apprentice in 1971, and became a licensed New York Pilot in October 1978. He spent more than 34 years as a Sandy Hook Pilot, and retired at the age of 63, on November 28, 2012. When he wasn't working, Tom was an avid sailor, fisherman, and outdoorsman, who never turned down a home cooked meal. He enjoyed all sports and followed Notre Dame and Penn State athletics. Tom was a proud uncle who loved to travel and experience the world with his family. His love for travel included the New England Coast and Cooperstown, NY to name a few.. Thomas is survived by his brothers: Gerard (Kathleen) Newman, and Charles Newman; four nieces and nephews: Kelly Coller (David), Timothy Newman (Dominique), Katherine Golebiewski (Michael) and Aimee Newman (fiance Michael); 6 grand nieces and 1 grand nephew. He was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Janet Newman and brothers Jack and William Newman. Visiting will be held Thursday, September 2 from 10 to 11 am at Stephens Funeral Home, Inc., 274 N. Krocks Rd., Allentown, PA 18106. Services will be at 11 am in the funeral home, with military honors to follow. www.stephensfuneral.com.
