Computer programmer, active parishioner, devoted family man Walter Hermansen, 87, of Eltingville, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at Staten Island University Hospital North. Born Monday, August 19, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late Walter and Dorothy Hermansen. Walter was the beloved husband to his late wife Regina. Walter and Regina were true soulmates. They were married for 63 years and were reunited in Heaven together just one week after Regina's passing on January 31st. He was a devoted Catholic. He was an active and founding member of Holy Child Church. Walter proudly served his community in faith by teaching CCD for over 30 years at Holy Child and helping to start the Eucharistic Ministry in the Parish. He was also a member of the Adoration Society. Above all else, Walter was an amazing grandfather. He was always active in his grandchildren's lives and never missed an event or milestone of theirs. He was their biggest fan. In his spare time, Walter could be found reading, writing his own stories, and enjoyed watching basketball. He was a computer programmer by trade who truly enjoyed working with technology. Walter is survived by his daughter, Kelly Carbonaro, his grandchildren Allison (Benjamin Jones), Michael and Christopher Carbonaro. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Walter was a loving friend to many, and she will truly be missed by all. He was predeceased by his son, Paul Hermansen, son in law Michael Carbonaro and siblings Robert Hermansen and Marianne Gleason. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday at Holy Child Church located at 4747 Amboy Road, Staten Island, New York 10312. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Friday, February 10, 2023, at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York. Mr. Hermansen graciously hired me when I was out of work. He was head of enterprise systems for his organization. It was a world of honest and ethical people, and Walter was stalwart.
I was proud to be chosen to organize his retirement party. The employees presented him with a well-weighted and richly hand-cut Waterford decanter. He was touched.
God bless Mr. Hermansen's family. He will be remembered with admiration.
