BERLIN CENTER - D. L. "Duke" Katterheinrich, 86, of Berlin Center, passed away Thursday afternoon, December 4th, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Boardman surrounded by his family.
Duke was a 1957 graduate of New Knoxville High School and worked as the owner operator of Dutch Harbor Marina on Berlin Reservoir for the past 51 years.
He married the former Ellen R. Platfoot on March 10,1962 in Hawaii. Together they shared 62 years of marriage and many happy memories. She preceded him in death on July 25, 2024.
Duke was a member of the Berlin Center United Methodist Church and a longtime member of the Berlin Lake Golf Club. He enjoyed tinkering with anything mechanical and loved participating in theater productions and was active in the church choir. He was a great man who loved his family and friends fiercely. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and was an integral part of their lives, offering them many life lessons. He was always there to offer anyone a helping hand, an ear to listen, or a shoulder to cry on. He was the "visitor" of the family and always enjoyed taking time to go and see family and friends no matter where they lived. He was active and on the run till the very end. He was a kind, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many, and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his two daughters, LuAnn (Kenneth) Kimker, of Waltham, MA and Jennifer (Christopher) Kirk, of North Benton. He also leaves behind six beloved grandchildren; Hannah (Matt) Burke, Alexa (Kolby) Sprague and Benjamin (Celia), Alexander (Paige), Caleb (Lauren) and Camille Kirk; three great-grandchildren; Lola and Legacy Kirk and Karson Sprague; a sister, Peggy (Thomas) Lammers; a brother-in-law, William Van Keuren; and two sisters-in-law, Barbara and Rita Platfoot.
Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, his son Mitchell Katterheinrich, brother Joe Katteheinrich, a sister Nancy Van Kueren, and two granddaughters, Cecelia and Christina Kirk.
Memorial services will be held Friday, December 12th at 11 AM at Berlin Center United Methodist Church, 15611 W. Akron-Canfield Rd., Berlin Center, OH 44401, with Pastor Fred Higgins officiating. Friends may call 4-7 PM Thursday, December 11th, at the Lane Funeral Home Canfield Chapel, 65 N. Broad St., Canfield. He will be laid to rest next to his wife in Glen Cemetery, Port Jefferson, OH.
