SIDNEY -- Wayne "Pete" Snavley, age 93 of Sidney passed away on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at 8:37 A.M. at Ohio Living Dorothy Love. He was born the 9th child of Frank and Lulu (Faler) Snavley on September 8, 1928.
Pete is survived by his loving family, wife Margery Ann (Tilton) Snavley, children Sharon Marie (Richard) Elliott, Wendy Sue (Steven) Shatto both of Sidney, and Steven Wayne (Debbie Zapp) Snavley of London, Ohio, nine grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Pete is preceded in death by his parents, Grandson, Christopher Elliott, sisters Lenora Williams, Ruth Quinn, and Doris (Lefty) Schurr, brothers, Erwin (Buddy), Homer (Whitey), Ralph (Sam), Paul (Mike), Everett (Jake), Dwight (Tubby), and John (Pud) Snavley.
Pete was born on a farm south of Jackson Center, Ohio, and attended grade school there until the age of 10 when the family moved to Wapakoneta, Ohio. In January of 1943 they returned to Shelby County where he graduated from Perry High School in 1946. On October 2, 1946, he married the love of his life, Margery Ann Tilton, daughter of George and Hazel Tilton. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary this past October 2nd.
After a short stint at Wagner Mfg., he began his career at DP&L as substation operator and when given the opportunity to advance, he attended night classes and was promoted to the engineering department. He retired in 04/01/1991 after 45 years of service. In the years prior to his promotion to engineer, he worked a variety of 2nd and 3rd jobs in order to support his growing family. They included farming, clerking at the Pemberton General Store/Post Office for Marion (Jake) Herring, television, and radio repairman, and following in his older brothers' (Whitey and Mike) footsteps, umpired many, many games at Custenborder Field.
He, as did all his brothers, loved sports. They formed a team called "The Snavley Brothers" and placed 3rd in the National Family Basketball Tournament at Wilson, N.C. in 1950. They also had their own softball team with their Dad, "Pop" Snavley, filling out the team roster as their 9th player.
And then: GOLF HAPPENED!! He was one of the original members of Shelby Oaks Golf Course when it opened in 1965. He gifted Marge a set of golf clubs for
her birthday and together they made many lifelong friends both at the course and throughout their 20+ retirement years as "snowbirds" in both Arizona and Florida. After his retirement you could count on seeing him most every day at the Oaks playing a quick 9. He was fortunate to be able to play the game he loved until his health prevented him from doing so at the ripe old age of nearly 90. He was truly one of golf's biggest fans.
Pete was a member of the Moose Lodge and also belonged to the Pasco United Methodist Church for 60+ years where he served as usher for many of those years.
He was a humble man who worked hard – played hard – and taught his family, by example, how to become honest, responsible citizens and caring, loving people. We will miss him, and he will be forever in our hearts.
Memorial Services will be held on Friday, May 20, 2022, at 1:00 P.M. at Pasco United Methodist Church with Pastors Jason Perkins and David Brisker, officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service. Inurnment will follow at Cedar Point Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church in Pete's memory.
