Dr. Charles Cleon Mitchell, age 85, of Valencia, California, passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. A visitation for Charles will be held September 19, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Eternal Valley Memorial Park Mortuary, 23287 North Sierra Hwy, Newhall CA 91321, followed by a funeral at 12:00 PM and committal service at 1:00 PM.
Charles was born in Missouri on October 7, 1937 and moved with his parents to Idaho in early 1938. There he graduated from Marsing High School as Valedictorian in 1955 and graduated With High Honors from the University of Idaho with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1959. Then, Charles served as a Regular Army officer whose service included training as an Airborne Ranger, two one-year combat tours in Vietnam, service in the Pentagon and command of a field artillery battalion during a two-year tour in Germany. The Army sponsored his attendance at Arizona State University where he earned a Master of Science in Engineering in 1966 and a Doctorate of Philosophy in 1968. Charles retired in December 1979 as a Lieutenant Colonel after having received numerous military and scholastic honors and awards. Charles spent the next 23 years working in the Los Angeles area as a Systems Engineer developing communications and intelligence systems for the U.S. military and foreign governments. He retired in January 2003 as a Senior Scientist/ Technical Director.
Charles is survived by his wife, Leota Jeanne Mitchell, and four daughters (Lisa, Cheri, Jennifer and Christina) as well as seven grandchildren and a brother (Robert) who resides in Idaho.
