Gregory T. Mullen

Greg Mullen, 71, passed away at his home, surrounded by family, in Santa Clarita, CA. He died due to complications of Parkinson's Disease. Greg was born in St. Louis, MO on September 17, 1954, and moved to California with his family in the 1960s, settling in the Palos Verdes Peninsula. He earned his BA in Business Economics and Sociology from UC Santa Barbara in 1976 and a Masters degree in Library Science from USC, where he met his beloved wife, Jocelyn, and they were married 46 years.
Greg worked various library jobs: at USC, at the LA County Library System, and for a time, was manager of the Newhall Library in the 1980s. Greg and Jocelyn moved to Saugus in 1982 and lived there most of their married life. Greg eventually landed his dream job with the City of Santa Monica working as the Assistant Library Director in 1992, and the Director of Santa Monica Libraries in 2005. The highlight of his working career was being a key consultant in the building of the 104,000 square foot, award-winning Santa Monica Main Library, opening in 2006. He retired from librarianship in 2013.
A family man to the core, Greg enjoyed various activities and vacations with his wife and 3 children, especially in the High Sierras. He also was creative and designed and made furniture, toys, and garden objects.
Greg is survived by his wife, Jocelyn Mullen, daughters Marissa (John) Hyke, Diana (Ricky) Klauss, and son, Benjamin Mullen. He has 4 wonderful grandchildren, Jaxon and Lyla Hyke, and Sierra and Spencer Klauss. Greg is also survived by his mother, Betty Mullen, of 101 years, and 5 siblings, John Mullen (Susan Weeks), Susan Rogers (Bill), Claudia Mills, Jill Boyd (Brad Holmes), and Paul Mullen (Charla), and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Mullen, and brother, James Mullen, age 2.
Greg's legacy is one of commitment, integrity, deep love, and generosity. He will be missed. A Celebration of Greg's life will be held at the Mullen home on November 29.
