Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Edward; sister, Mary Lou Grevey; and the mother of his children, Jeanette Birmingham.

Ed is survived by his children, Theresa "Terri" Birmingham, Sherri Sommer, Eddie Birmingham, Lary Birmingham, Amy Feldhacker (Neil), and Mike Birmingham (Stephanie); grandchildren, Tina, Julio, Alexander (Meghan), Sam, Joe, John, Michael, Dylan, Averyl, and Emmet; great-grandchildren, Creighton, Rylan, and Jace; many beloved nieces and nephews; and his companion, Joanne Furze. He is also survived by his siblings and their spouses, Patrick Birmingham (Barbara) of Nebraska and Florida, Robert Birmingham (Mary) of Cocoa Beach, FL, George Birmingham (Tammy) of Sioux Falls, SD, and Carol Strait (Randy) of Sioux City.

Ed was the oldest of six siblings born to Edward and Margaret Birmingham in Sioux City. He completed his undergraduate studies at Creighton University and earned his Juris Doctorate degree from Catholic University Law School and his LLM in taxation from Georgetown Law School. He was a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association and the Florida State Bar Association.

Ed was a respected member of the legal community, having taught at Creighton University School of Law for more than 50 years. Beloved by his students, Ed was honored by the Nebraska Bar Foundation as Legal Educator of the Year in 2020. Ed retired from Creighton in 2021 with the distinction of Professor Emeritus.

Family and friends were the most important thing to Ed, spending summers with his children and grandchildren at his home on Lewis and Clark Lake and winters in Florida with his brothers and sisters and his companion Joanne.

Ed loved sports! A loyal Creighton Blue Jays fan, he rooted as well for the Huskers, Notre Dame, and the Kansas City Chiefs. Ed was also an avid reader, especially of legal fiction and anything western. On any given day you could find Ed on the golf course playing a sport he loved.

Ed's wisdom, kindness and quiet humor touched many lives.

Professor Birmingham was one of my favorite Professors at Creighton Law School. I will also say he was one of the most admirable men I have ever met. I regret that I didn't spend more time with him. His wit and intelligence were matched with his tact and empathy. He often gave me and my fellow students a taste of his wit but it never made the target feel bad. That is a rare talent. I am sorry I found out about his passing only this morning. I feel I should have been at his funeral. To his family I offer my condolences and hope you are comforted by his memory.

Ed and Rod Shkolnick were two wonderful colleagues who meant the world to me. Ed and Rod were also best friends, and they were my friends too. I miss them both, as I am sure the entire Omaha legal community does as well.

Ed channeled Jack Benny during Fed Tax class. He was as comfortable at the lectern as he was at the Blue Jay Bar during welcome week. He let One Ls assume he was an older student who decided to attend law school later in life. His ride looked like it came off the set of Dukes of Hazard. I have no clue how I passed his class. Thanks Ed!

A great teacher with a wonderfully dry sense of humor. Can't say I enjoyed Federal Income Tax, but he included practicality in his lectures. Also my Moot Court coach. I'm sure he'll be able to argue himself into a great spot in heaven.

Ed taught me Federal Tax and was our Moot Court sponsor in the early 70´s at Creighton Law School. Great teacher and a wonderful family man. I never heard Ed raise his voice in anger. We will miss him.
