Michael Olson Obituary

Michael "Mike" Olson

December 16, 1947 - November 28, 2025

Michael F. "Mike" Olson, 77, passed away peacefully at his home on November 28, 2025.

Per his wishes, Mike was cremated and no services are planned at this time.

Mike was born on December 16, 1947, in Dodgeville, Wis., the son of Clifford D. and Bette Jean (Osborne) Olson. Raised in Belvedere, S.D., Mike completed his education at Leeds High School in Sioux City, before continuing to Westmar College, where he earned his bachelor's degree. His academic endeavors laid the foundation for his impactful career and lifelong learning.

Mike began his career as a truck driver, a role that not only shaped his work ethic but also influenced his commitment to teaching others in the field. He later became an instructor at Western Iowa Technical Community College (WITCC), imparting his knowledge and expertise to aspiring truck drivers. His career culminated in a retirement from the South Dakota Highway Patrol, where he served with distinction. Additionally, Mike was a proud former member of the Teamsters Union, reflecting his dedication to the labor movement and worker rights.

An ardent sports fan, Mike, displayed unwavering loyalty to the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Green Bay Packers. He found joy in golfing with his brother Doug and treasured the time spent with his family, engaging in conversation and sharing experiences that brought them closer together.

Mike is survived by his loving son, Tim Olson of Newark, Del., and his daughter, Lori Olson-Newton, along with her husband Corey, of Sun City, Ariz. He was a proud grandfather to Tyler and wife Alexa Olson of Glendale, Ariz., and Spencer Olson and fiancé Huntington of Sun City, Ariz. He is also survived by his brothers: Doug Olson and significant-other Cheri of Sioux City, Iowa, and Jerry and wife Shirley Olson of Dodgeville, Wis., along with his stepbrother Jim and wife Tammy Goldsmith, and stepsister, Carla Andersen.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Bette Jean Goldsmith.
