SPRINGFIELD, IL - Brian George Altman, 71, of Springfield, died March 13, 2016 at 5:07pm at Gunderson Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin following complications from heart surgery.
Known as a man of his word, he was fiercely devoted to those who mattered most to him, including his wife Bonnie (Handley), their daughter Chelsea, son-in-law Dr. Abdul Rehman, and his two grandsons, Abram (4), and Adam (3). Most days Brian could be found on the living room floor spending quality time with the two little boys who mattered to him more than anything.
He was born February 22, 1945 in Chicago to Jack and Arlene Altman and was preceded in death by his parents, brother (Jack), sister (Sandy), and nephew (Nick). In addition to the above, his nephew Chris and niece Mandy, and beloved longhaired daschund Jack survive him.
Brian graduated from Waukegan High School in 1963 and the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana in 1970. He worked 30 years for the State of Illinois, as a social worker at the Department of Public Aid and the Secretary of State. After retirement, Brian dedicated his time to pursue his passions. He was a connoisseur of beer and excelled at shooting pool, playing chess with anyone who would oblige, had a love for photography, attended peace demonstrations, and had riveting political discussions with anyone and everyone. He loved intelligent, well-informed people and suffered no fools.
We ask that everyone would raise a glass of his or her favorite drink in remembrance of Brian. Services will be held Saturday, March 19, at 4pm at the Knights of Columbus Council #4175, Devereaux Heights, Springfield, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Senior Services of Central Illinois, 701 West Mason Street, Springfield, IL 62702. If unable to make a donation, an unsolicited act of kindness to a stranger would be appropriate.

Brain touched my heart at very young age. He was one of the very few examples I've ever seen of what a real man, husband, father, and friend should be. Sending my prayers and condolences to all of his family and loved ones.
