Doye O'Keefe Obituary

Doye Lindsay O'Keefe Jr.

SPRINGFIELD - Doye Lindsay O'Keefe Jr., 90, long time resident of Springfield, Illinois who grew up and married in Centralia, Illinois passed away peacefully in his sleep, on Wednesday, January 11th, 2012 in Rock Island, Illinois, near his son and family. Visitation will be at 3:00 p.m. until the time of service at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, January 16, at Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 E Allen St. Springfield, IL, 62703 Rev. Mary Ellen Sharp of Central Baptist Church will officiate the services. Burial and graveside services will be 11:00 at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, Centrailia, Illinois on Tuesday, January 17. Doye "Suey" O'Keefe was born October 18, 1921, the son of Doye Sr. and Glenna Touve Harris O'Keefe in Centralia, Illinois. Doye and his brother John Gail, grew up and experienced many adventures as boys and young men in Sunfield, Illinois and along and around the Kaskaskia River. Hunting, fishing, playing games, making "something" from the rubble found in their travels, was time well spent for young men who would come to know the challenges that the world would require of them during World War II.

Doye graduated from Centralia High School in 1939 and joined the United States Army in 1942 where he eventually became a Technical Sergeant Radio Operator & Gunner in the Army Air Corps, assigned to the 8th Air Force, 445th Bomber Squadron, flying B24 bombing missions over Germany while based in England. He participated in the Normandy, Rhineland and Northern France campaigns before being shot down in his 29th combat mission over Kassel, Germany, September 27, 1944. He was captured and held as a POW in Stalag Luft IV. Near the end of the war, he was part of a 78 day forced march of approximately 500 miles which ended in Butterfield, Germany where he joined the 104th Timber Wolf Division. Doye was awarded the following medals during his service during World War II: Gunner's Wings, Prisoner of War Medal, European Theater of Operation Service Emblem with three major campaign stars, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Service Medal, Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Doye returned to the United States and married his high school sweetheart, Sara Jane Allen on July 17, 1945. Upon discharge from the U.S. Army in October of 1945 Doye began a long and distinguished career with the S.S. Kresge and Kmart Corporation where he worked as the General Manager of numerous Kmart stores throughout the Midwest. He worked hard to be the best husband, father, employee and general manager possible, always making time for devotion to his church. He became the father of two sons, Stephen Lindsay, Michael Allen and grandfather of three grandchildren, John Michael, Lindsay Sara and Theresa Lee O'Keefe. He continued to enjoy and share with his sons outdoor activities that he learned to do as a young man and was an avid boater, fisherman, hunter, bee keeper and general nature enthusiast. Doye and his wife were avid St. Louis Cardinal Fans and followed college football and basketball. He was very active in the Ex-POW organization serving in many different capacities, including chaplain; and was an active member of Central Baptist Church, Springfield. Upon his retirement he spent many hours as a naturalist interpreter at the Lincoln Memorial Garden on Lake Springfield in Springfield, Illinois. He wrote a number of personal journals detailing his adventures as a child and young man, as well as detailing his experiences as a POW during WWII. These are invaluable gifts that provide snapshots of the past that will be able to be kept alive forever.

Doye devoted many hours caring for his wife during an extended illness prior to her death in March 2005. Doye was also preceded in death by his parents and son, Stephen O'Keefe. He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Sherry O'Keefe; daughter-in-law, Linda O'Keefe; brother, J. Gail O'Keefe; grandchildren, John, Lindsay and Theresa O'Keefe as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visitation and funeral service will be held at Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 E Allen, Springfield, Monday, January 16. Please Visit the online obituary at www.bischandsonfuneralhome.com

What a great man and Uncle! It was always exciting to spend time with him as each experience was an education in life. He was a real gentleman, they don't make them like that anymore.

Many years ago--in the early '70's, I believe--Doye and I shot trap on the same team at Mather's Gun Club, and we had a friendly rivalry about who was going to be the top gun. I don't remember who won,but I do remember the many weekly meetings we enjoyed, and that Doye was a fun member of the team and notably a fine gentleman.
My sympathy to the family, and Godspeed to Doye.

We knew Doye and Sarah O'Keefe when they were members of the Herb Taylor Sunday School Class at Central Baptist Church. For many years they hosted an annual summer cook-out at their home on Lake Springfield that was always a fun time. Doye was a wonderful man and will be missed by all of us.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Although I never met him, after reading the newspaper I know I would have liked him very much. I would have especially loved taking a tour through the Lincoln Garden with him. I know you will miss him every day, but please take consolation in knowing you allowed him to spend his last years in your home surrounded by his loved ones.
Again, my deepest sympathy to all of you...Marian Nylin & family

Uncle Suey was a very special man! Unfortunately I haven't been able to spend time with him in quite some time however he has always had a special place in my heart from the memories he gave me as a child. I am so sorry to hear about his passing because the world has loss a wonderful man. My thoughts are with the family and loved ones through this hard time.

To Michael, Linda and John,
I am sorry to hear of the passing of a very special American. I was a great friend of Doye and Sara's son Steve. We were fraternity brothers and roommates in college, and practiced medicine in Columbia, MO. until the early death of Steve. I knew Sara and Doye well, and used to stop and visit them on occasion at their wonderful lakeside home when I was visiting family in Springfield. They truly were like family, but we have lost contact now for many years. I used to enjoy Doye telling stories of when he was a young man and of his duck hunting and fishing adventures. Both Doye and wife Sara are a very positive rememberance in my life, and they will not be forgotten in the future either. I'm sure they both had a well reserved place in the hereafter and I am sure Doye is enjoying his reunion with Sara and Steve. God bless all of Doye's family. I know he was a great husband, father and grandfather and gave of himself selfishly to his beloved country.

To the O'Keefe family

Please accept my sincerest condolences on your loss.

I had the honor to know Doye as a Kmart Regional Office executive and as a friend while visiting family in Springfield.

He was known by Kmart Corporation as one of the finest, most knowledgeable, dependable and dedicated store managers. We rarely visited his store. We didn't need to. His store was always right.

My best memory is a letter Doye wrote to my mother about me. His glorious writing made her so proud. She left me that letter and I treasure it to this day.

Doye was one-of-a-kind. His legacy will live on through the many people he touched throughout his life, including mine.

I am so sorry for your loss. I knew Doye and Sarah from when my mother worked for Central Baptist. They always came to see me at the Denny's on Stevenson for morning coffee. Doye was always the gentleman and known to give encouragement to anyone.

I worked for Mr O'Keefe at store 4048 at the Clearlake Avenue Kmart for several years prior to his retirement. I eventually became a classroom teacher for 34 years and used a lot of the information that Mr. O'Keefe used in his "classes" on Friday mornings.
He was a wealth of information and very knowledgeable about all aspects of runnning a store. You would never know it today, but store 4048 on Clearlake Avenue was the number one retailer in Springfield throughout the late 60's and early 70's.
Mr. O'Keefe thought of his employees as family and he was definitely the "father" of the family. He ruled with an iron fist, and many employees did not like him, but everyone respected him. I lost track of him after his retirement, but thought of him everytime I drove by the Clearlake store, or heard stories of WWII. He was truly a great man, and he will be missed by all that he touched.

Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. O'Keefe, I was reading his story this morning and I would just like to say that America has lost a great man. He sounds like one of the men my father always talks about who went to war, did their job and then came home and built a country. May God take you in his arms as he welcomes you home. God bless America and we are forever greatful for Mr. O'Keefe's courage and service to his country.

Sincerely,
