Peggy Cullen Obituary

ATHENS - Peggy Joella Cullen, 55, of Athens passed away on August 27, 2009, at St. Louis University Hospital after a prolonged illness.

She was born on November 13, 1953, in Springfield, Illinois, the daughter of Jess and Betty Jones Coates. She married Daniel T. Cullen in 1976.

Peggy was preceded in death by her father, Jess (JP) Coates and her mother, Betty Sprouse.

Peggy is survived by her loving husband, Dan; children, Brandon Cullen (wife, Jennifer) of Athens, Aaron Cullen (companion, Seana Holt) of Springfield, Laura Cullen also of Springfield, and Adam Cullen of Chicago; a grandson, Logan Cullen; her sisters, Paula Caveny of Edwardsville and Judy Cockayne and Sandy Davis, both of Springfield; brother, Jess Coates of Arkansas; and lifelong friend, Ruth Holmes of Springfield.

Peggy was a true original with a spirited personality. She was a lover of nature, gardening, and animals. But most of all, Peggy was a fabulous homemaker and caring wife, mother, and grandmother whose life centered around those she loved and those who loved her and there are many. She was often called upon to be an unofficial caregiver to those in need, family and friends alike.

Peggy worked hard all of her life and was professionally employed as a caregiver for retired priests at the Springfield Diocesan Retirement Center and as hostess for Cheddars restaurant.

The family would like to encourage everyone to become an organ and tissue donor.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Auxiliary House at St. Louis University Hospital or to the Cullen family.

Following cremation, a celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, September 2, from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Secret Recipes, 3086 Normandy Road, off Stevenson Drive.

Online condolences may be sent through www.mottandhennings.com.

I remember going to see George Carlin at Sangamon State University one year and we laughed our butts off. I have so many fun memories of you and Dan and the kids. Thanks for all the good fabulous memories! Think about all the time. Girl, I know you would really like my husband, Kelly. He is the bomb. You met him but didn´t get to know him. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this unbelievably hard time. Brandon and I went to St Joseph's together and Peggy always made it a point to make all of us feel welcome. In recent years I have lost touch with the family, but my mom had the honor of seeing Peggy from time to time and stated she always asked how the family was. She will be remembered by many as a woman who always cared for others.

Dan & Family: I am so sorry and saddened for all of you. Peg's absence will surely present an unfillable void. I feel sickened with the reality that she is gone. I feel so fortunate to have been able to meet her and spend several fun times together, but also feel cheated that those time were only the last 5 to 6 years. I wish there could have been more to come. I will miss her snappy eyes and that beautiful smile. In all my years I have never met anyone quite like her. Peggy had a way about her that silently commanded attention when she came into your space. I knew from the first time I met her that she was highly spirited. Peg was the type of person you enjoyed being around and always welcomed more of her. There was so much more about her I would have liked to got to know. God knows how much all of us will miss her, after all why else would he bring her home so soon. For myself, "Peg" is another "fine" reason to not fear but look forward to my own crossing over. Danny (Ruth's Brother) sends his condolences to the family. We both send our love, for we loved Peg very much. Ellen & Dan Kuchen

Yes indeed, God broke the mold when Peg was made! She was the "best friend" anyone could ever ask for. A wonderful Mother, Wife, Sister and Woman. So dedicated to those she loved and cherished. I will sorely miss her and all the "grand" times we shared throughout the many years I was blessed with her company and friendship. You always knew, without question, where you stood with Peg. Dan, I'm here for you and the kids, whenever you need me - I'll be there always in Peg's honor. Forever in my prayers and thoughts ... ...

I am so sorry that I cannot be there for the family in this time of need, but know my thoughts are with you all. It meant the world to me to see her one last time before I left. I will cherish that memory forever.
