MODESTO, IL - Phyllis Irene Hopper, 84, passed away at 6:45 p.m., Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Carlinville Rehab & Health Care Center in Carlinville, Ill.
Phyllis was born May 31, 1929, in Modesto, a daughter to Clarence Otis and Myrl Othelia (Anderson) Ashby. She married Donald Lee Hopper on Feb. 4, 1948, in Carlinville, Ill.
Phyllis was a 1947 graduate of Modesto High School and loved needlecraft, sewing and quilting. She worked for Northwestern High School in Palmyra, Ill., as a secretary for many years. She later worked at the Illinois State Board of Education and retired from Purina Chow in St. Louis, Mo.
Surviving Phyllis are sons: Phillip (Kristen) Hopper of Scott City, Mo., Larry (Ann) Hopper of St. Charles, Mo., and David (Mary) Hopper of Carlinville, Ill.; daughters, Beverly Hazelwood of Marion, Ill., and Connie (Scott) Eyer of Belleville, Ill.; brothers: Alan Ashby of Carlinville, Ill., Donald (Darlene) Ashby of Auburn, Ill., and Gary (Rosemary) Ashby of Peoria, Ill.; sisters: Marilyn Ashby of Springfield, Ill., Linda (C.J.) Stewart of Hot Springs, Ark., and Carol Nevin of Chicago, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Phyllis in death are her parents; husband, Donald Lee Hopper; and one great-grandson.
Visitation will be from 5–8 p.m., Sunday, July 7, 2013, at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Girard, Ill. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday July 8, 2013, also at the funeral home in Girard with Brian Gruen officiating. Interment will be in the Union Chapel Cemetery, Girard, IL.
Memorials may be made to the Modesto Baptist Church, Modesto, Ill.
