Margaretta Thunman Hovey
VICKERS LANDING, FL - Phyllis Margaretta Thunman Hovey, a resident at Vickers Landing, FL, died peacefully on November 27, 2012.
Born January 25, 1926 in Buffalo, New York, Phyllis was the daughter of Swedish immigrants who loved this country, and her father, Carl E. Thunman became an awarded State engineer for Illinois. Phyllis graduated Phi Beta Kappa from William Woods University, Missouri in 1945. She married Thomas E. Hovey in 1947 and had two children, Scott D. Hovey and Julie H. Clairmont, and a long and happy marriage.
Phyllis was a dedicated teacher all her life, an expert antique restorer and interior designer, and was an active member in her churches and choirs, most recently as a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra, Florida. She ran the 1972 Census in Boston and was a docent for the Hartford Art Museum in New York. Phyllis was a Master bridge player and even taught line dancing when they lived in Savannah, GA. She was an enthusiastic and charming participator in all of life, ever ready to laugh and learn something new.
She is survived by her children, Scott and Julie, her brother, VADM N.R. Thunman USN (Ret.), five grandsons, one granddaughter, and five great-grandchildren, and all brought her great joy over the years.
There will be a Memorial Service in her honor at Vickers Landing on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 11:00 AM and a reception will follow in the Parlor. Phyllis will be interred on her 87th birthday weekend, January 26, 2013 , with her husband, Tom, in her family's hometown, Springfield, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Vickers Landing Scholarship Fund, 1000 Vickers Landing Way, Ponte Vedra, FL 32082. Thank you.
