SPRINGFIELD, IL - Robert E. "Bob" Maxey, 90, of Springfield, Ill., died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015, at St. John's Hospice in Springfield.
Bob was born July 29, 1925, in Springfield, the son of Wilson and Esther Byers Maxey. He married Frances "Fran" Leahy on Oct. 7, 1950, in Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Fran, in 2010; a son, James Maxey; and granddaughter, Ellyn Maxey.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Springfield. Bob graduated from Springfield High School in 1943 and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1949. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Patton's Third Army 87th Division.
Bob was the owner and president of Byers Printing Co. for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Springfield Noon Lions Club for more than 60 years, serving in most of the club's offices. Bob served as Lions District Governor, 1-E, from 1965-66. He also served on several Lions state committees. He was elected to the board of directors for Lions Clubs International serving from 1981-82. Bob received numerous awards and citations for his service to Lions, including its highest award, the Ambassador of Good Will.
Bob was an active member of his church and active in the Springfield community, serving on the board and as president of the Triangle Center, serving on the board and as president of the Mary Bryant Home for the Blind and Visually Impaired, along with several other boards and committees.
He is survived by a son, William R. (wife, Kathy) Maxey of Springfield; a daughter, Mary (husband, David) Moreland of Chatham; a brother, Edward (wife, Gerry) Maxey of Springfield; four grandchildren, Christopher, Emily, Robert and Elizabeth Maxey; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Petefish; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 20, at First Congregational Church, 2100 S. Bates Ave., Springfield, IL.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Sept. 21, at the church with the Rev. Daniel Dexter officiating.
Entombment will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery Mausoleum in Springfield.

So sorry to hear of the passing of this great man. I had no idea Bob had passed. I always enjoyed him coming into the salon and getting his nails cut and our little talks of how him and Franny met . He loved that woman with all his heart and as much as we will all miss him. I am so happy they are back together in heaven.. My deep sympathy to the Maxey family. Bob was a wonderful man and a true professional in the printing business. His assistance and attention to detail made my job at the Sangamon County Election Office easy and made elections error free. I always had the highest regard for his advice and friendship.
