CHATHAM - Roberta M. Workman, 81, a nearly lifelong resident of Chatham and briefly of Springfield, was called Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, by her Heavenly Father to a glorious, long-anticipated reunion with her beloved twin sister, Alberta Walter Baumhardt. Certainly, no words could possibly have described Roberta's joy as her Father clasped her hand, drew her near to Himself, whispered that she was home at last and allowed her to again glimpse the tender face of her sister.
She was born Oct. 16, 1926, in Chatham to James J. and Marie Otti Shields. She spent many years assisting her parents in their general store, Shields Appliance and Service. She loved recounting cherished childhood memories - many of which were borne at the knees of her grandparents, Elmer and Daisy Inman Otti and Thomas and Nora Belle Woolary Shields. She graduated from Chatham High School, married, lived on a farm south of Chatham and raised her four daughters, Paula (Dennis) Kopp, Pamela (J. Logan) Patton, Rowena (Robert) Neumann, all of whom are of Chatham, and Sherry (Ronald) Tallon of Springfield. She is survived by her loving sister, Eileen (J. LaVern) Workman of Chatham; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Roberta was an amateur radio operator (K9KWM); an accomplished, sought-after vocal soloist; and a beautician. Her passions were tending to the needs of others, doll collecting, flower gardening, fellowshipping with dear friends and, most of all, helping to raise her grandchildren in the fear and admonition of the Lord. A member of Calvary Temple Christian Center in Springfield, she treasured her years of singing with the great Temple Choir, listening to her beloved pastor and recalling her Holy Land travels.
"Most certainly, Roberta loved her children with all of her heart, and her children will forever love her."
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at Calvary Temple, 1730 W. Jefferson St. Additional visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Calvary Temple, with the Rev. Paul Rose officiating. Burial will be in Chatham Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Calvary Temple or a charity of choice.

Grandma always had a testimony for her grandchildren. She always wanted to make sure we knew Jesus ,put Him first, and shared her knowledge of the Lord with us at every visit. Grandma will always hold a special place in my heart, and I cannot wait to see her again. I never was able to tell Grandma of my twins , and I wish I could ask her a million questions about her experience with raising twins. One day we will be able to exchange our experiences and looking forward to it. SO thankful for the Hope we have in Jesus and to see our love ones again.

Roberta was my very dear friend from the first grade at Caldwell school in Chatham and I will miss our frequent phone "talks" we had from out here in CA. We both love the Lord and I know we will meet again some day. My deepest sympathy to all of her family. She was a wonderful Christain lady and will be missed so very much.

Gosh, I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of Roberta. I didn't know her well but my memories of her were always good. I remember her coming by at times when I would visit Uncle Jim & Aunt Marie, her Mom & Dad, when I was a kid. And at one of the last Otti reunions we had back in the early 80's. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

What a glorious song there was bursting through the clouds as your mother passed over to Heaven. There was't an angel that did not sing. The pain is no longer your mother's. The only pain left is the sweet sorrow the family feels in their hearts. Though you know she is with Jesus it is very hard to let go. May you know that I will be praying for you that Jesus will wrap you in His arms and comfort you and give you abundant peace now and in the many months to come.

Dear Cousins,
I just want to say what an honor it was to have Roberta for an Aunt. She was truly a gift from God. I am so very thankful for what she taught me about the Lord. How she loved me thru thick and thin, and never let go of my hand. She was like a second mother to me. We had such great times together. I know she is thrilled to be with Jesus and my Mom. What James said in the guest book--- I give a hearty "Amen"
May the Lord bless you and keep you!
Much love!

Sherry, Rowena, Pam, and Paula,
Your Mom always made me feel like one of her kids. She knew how bad I hurt when my Mom died and stepped in for me. Her love was Christ-like - unwaivering, even when I didn't deserve it. It was a rare, precious love that I will miss till I see her again. Thank you for sharing her with me.

My grandma was such a wonderful person, and both my son Jimmy and I miss her dearly.
Grandma prayed that each of her grandchildren would love God and always place Him first in their lives. Her prayers for me were answered. I thank God for her example.

My grandma was wonderful and will be greatly missed by all of us. She had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren while watching them grow up. As her grandchildren grew older and had children of their own...the great-grandchildren would put that same smile upon her face when around. Our family was truly blessed and loved because of grandma. Myself, my husband Bryan, and our children Blake and Kayla, miss her dearly but she will be in our hearts forever....
