Vernon L. Smith
VIRDEN, IL – Vernon L. Smith, 93, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at Pleasant Hill Village, Girard, Ill.
Vern was born March 27, 1921, in Virden, a son of Everett E. and Mabel (Brantley) Smith. He was a 1939 graduate of Virden High School and served in the U.S. Army during WW II in the South Pacific. He married Ellen L. Schroder on April 17, 1942, in Carlinville, Ill. Vern owned and operated Smith-Brown Insurance Agency in Virden for many years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Virden, the Virden American Legion Post #386, the Virden Masonic Lodge #161 A.F. & A.M.; served on the Virden City Council, the Virden cemetery board; and was an avid Cardinal fan.
Surviving Vern are his sons, Roger L. (Yvonne) Smith of Broomfield, Colo., and Gregory L. (Sharon) Smith of Springfield, Ill.; six grandchildren; several great- grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Berry of Virden; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death was his wife, Ellen Smith, and his brother, Everett E. Smith, Jr.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Friday, July 18, 2014, at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, with funeral services at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at the funeral home. Rev. Mary Alice Cunningham will officiate. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Foundation. Burial will be in Virden Cemetery.

Vernon was a great friend of my parents. I remember back in 1965 after Dad's surgery, he would come by and pick up Dad to go with him for rides. Rest in peace, Vernon.

Good memories fromm way back, especially at the Methodist Church when (mom) Mable played the pipe organ. Great guy!

I have said for many years that Vernon was one my favorite people. His great smile and great attitude made the world a better place in my opinion. And could he dance! He will be missed.

We have heard so many, many good stories about Vernon. We know he had a very successful insurance agency which says a lot about him also. Prayers for his family and friends as remember old times.

Vernon was a Great neighbor and friend for life. I will miss his smile, humor and his kind heart. I am so blessed to have had him in my life.
