Virgilio, my beloved husband of almost 60 years, you left me on January 16, 2019. What is left for me are all the unforgettable memories of our togetherness and shared happy moments. You gave me everything that any woman would deserve as well as the moon, as you promised when we were young. Now that you are gone I am presuming you are resting in Heaven. It's really too much pain to bear, you being gone from my sight, but I don't have any choice but to accept it. As I had said at the hospital when you were critical you were given to me by God and I am giving you back to him. That is the only way I am able to accept you being gone from me forever on this Earth with full acceptance and peace. Now that you are gone, in my grief, I have your children, relatives, friends, and acquaintances to share my happy and fond memories of you. Virgilio, my husband, may God bless you and may you rest in peace, your beloved wife, Elena

On behalf of the Reserve Officer Association (ROA) we want to express our deepest sympathy on the death of Captain Virgilio (Gil) Pilapil, United States Navy (Retired). Gil was a strong supporter of our organization and worked tirelessly in support of the Active Military and the Reserve Forces (Reserves and National Guard). He and his wonderful wife, Elena, have been long, long time members and supporters of ROA and of his beloved United States of America.
We are deeply saddened by Gil's death, but yet, we rejoice in knowing that he had a wonderful and blessed life, and is now at Peace with his loving Savior, Jesus.
We all extend our deepest sympathy to Elena and the rest of the family and to his associates and his many, many friends.

Dear Auntie Elena,
Our deepest condolences to you and your family.
We are deeply saddened with the passing of Kuya Virgilio. I remember seeing him years ago When I visited in the Philippines. I just talked to my dad Mariano Pilapil a few days ago. He told me Kuya Virgilio was my grandma's favorite and that she was always happy to see him when she was alive. I heard he was very kind and caring. My dad has nothing but good things to say about him. My dad is affected by his loss and wants to extend his love to your family.
Sincerely,
Melinda Pilapil de Ocampo

Dad, I love you and I always will, you are my father and were and always will be my best friend. I've lost you on this earth as my mentor, my role model, my encourager and supporter but you will forever live in my memories, in my heart, and in the positive things that I accomplish and do in this life. You gave me strength and courage to find my way as a man and although I can never measure up to you, I am so proud to be a fraction of who you were and what you have accomplished. I cannot remember a time when I said no or I can't to you and that is only because I cannot remember a time when you said no or I can't to me. You will be remembered and missed every day of my life. I know you watch over me and all of us from up above and I will rejoice in the day when I am once again in your loving presence. So for now, I leave you in the care of our heavenly Father and pray that he will eternally bless you. Your Junior and your forever loving Son, Gilly

I was so so sorry and saddened to see this in the paper. I had the pleasure of working with and for Dr. Pilapil for 10 years. He was a great boss and a wonderful friend to me. The kids and parents loved him. He was a very sweet and kind man. He taught me so many things over the years. Will always have a very special place in my heart. To his family, my heart is sad for you. I am very very sorry. RIP Dr. Pilapil.. you will be missed by so many.

I was very sorry to hear this sad news. I met Dr. Pilapil in 1975. I spent time in his office as a medical student and also interacted with him when I was a pediatric resident at SIU. He was always very pleasant and easy to exchange thoughts about patient care. For many years we were fellow pediatricians in Springfield and for some years thereafter we worked together at Disability Determination Services for the State of Illinois. He was always a gentleman in his interactions with others.
