I am sure the many condolences left for the family of Dr. Coughlin will bring them comfort. My husband and I were his patients and friends for thirty five years beginning at Doctors Park. He called my husband his "miracle patient" bringing him back to life twice. My husband of sixty years passed away April 5 exactly two months before Doc. Am sure Daryle welcomed Doc with open arms and the two of them are sharing stories like they did in life. He truly cared for his patients and did everything he could for them. May all the precious memories you have help bring you strength. My thoughts and prayers were with you during his illness and will continue to be with you. May God wrap His arms around each of you giving you comfort. I know how hard it is to lose your husband. It was hard to learn of Dr. Coughlin's passing.

Thirty-four years ago "by accident" we met Dr. Coughlin in the emergency room and he became our family physician immediately. We are both alive today because of his expertise as a doctor. He was more than a doctor to us. He was our friend. Our condolences to you his family. May his memory live on forever. He will be greatly missed. Don & Mary Jo Keefauver, Lewistown

My deepest sympathy to the family. We as patients of Dr Coughlin, were very very spoiled by him. We got to see him the day you called, got all results of our tests at 730 AM the next day, not 2 weeks later. I have known him when he was a resident at MMC. We nurses helped raised the new docs.I recommended him to everyone. He was always up on the new procedures, what Mayo was doing and the others doctors from Spfld would wonder how he knew before they did. He read up in the magazines and knew about them. I can still hear him say GIRLS- GET the EKG or whatever procedure he wanted to do RIGHT THEN!!!! And the girls were fast! He would tell me his woes, then he would say ok what did you come in to see me about. Loved his stories and opinons on things and life. YOU ALWAYS FELT GOOD WHEN HE CAME INTO THE HOSPITAL ROOM TO SEE YOU!!! YOU KNEW YOU WERE SAFE BECAUSE HE KNEW YOU AND HAD YOUR BACK TO GET YOU BETTER. Many times he would tell his patients oh, We will get you out by Christmas and it would be April. The patients would have a look on their face like WHAT? I HOPE SO!!!! Then they would laugh. He was a good friend, colleague, brilliant Doctor, family man from his talks, loved his children, wife and grandchildren, could tell him anything, always felt relaxed to talk to him.I had a good nurse, patient, doctor rapport. He will be very missed in my life. He was our safe haven for his patients.Glad he remained at home with his loving family. He was a very very special person, family. He will be missed by the Spfld community immensely! Rest in Peace Dr Coughlin, you have earned it by your wonderful life.( I was in Denver so I couldn't made the service, I'm very sorry,I would of been there)

To Kim and the entire family. I want to express our deepest condolences to all of you for this tremendous loss. I have been a patient of Dr. Coughlin since the early 80's. We originally went to Dr. Coughlin with my wife, Herma. She was very ill from an intestinal bypass and Dr told me after the reversible surgery, he wouldn't have given her a year to live. After that, he always called her his miracle patient. That is when he became our family physician. I have lost a lot of loved ones in my lifetime, and I feel the same way now with the passing of the only Dr. I ever went to. I'll remember him for the rest of my life. May God hold you all in the palm of His hand and remind you of His never ending Love for you.
Forever in my heart and in my memories.

Please accept my deepest sympathies and condolences for the passing of Dr. Coughlin. As a former patient, I highly valued his advice, opinions and referrals. On at least two occasions, he may have saved my life.
I am also very thankful for his treatment of one of my sisters when she suffered from leukemia near the end of her life. In recent years, I would see him at the hospital when I was a caregiver for my mother and at the grocery store. He always had time to say hello and had a smile on his face.
You will be missed, Dr. Coughlin, by the countless lives you touched and healed. God bless you and your family.

Dr. Coughlin was my mom's dr. for many years. They were buddies and she loved to hear him tell stories about his family. They always shared a good laugh that was more therapeutic than any pill he could have prescribed. He pulled her through many episodes of CHF. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this time of sadness. It was a pleasure to have known you, Dr. C.

What a loss! Dr. was absolutely the best. He was my wife's (Lana Arlene) Dr. for well over 30 years. We moved 150 miles north in 1989, but Lana would not give up Dr. Coughlin. We continued to come to Springfield through 2009 whenever she had anything other than a run of the mill cold. In 2007 she had a life threatening bout with congestive heart failure. Mainly through the care of Dr. she survived 2.5 months in intensive care and 10 months in a rehab facility, she was able to return home. Several months later she had a complete recovery. We both thought that Dr. Coughlin was the angel she needed then. I know his many other patients felt he was that same angel to them. My heartfelt sympathy to the family.

I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Coughlin. He became my doctor in 1980 and I was devastated when he had to stop his practice because of his illness.I know he was at work many days when he felt horrible but showed up because of his patients. He was always available to help me in my illnesses and I was at a loss that I could do nothing for him in return. My thoughts go out to his family. Just know that he was a wonderful doctor and a very caring person. I am very sorry for your loss.

Dr. Coughlin was one of the very finest Doctors I had the pleasure of knowing. It is very true that he treated his friends and patients with the respect and compassion. His patients were very lucky, and honored at the same time, that he was their physician. He cared greatly for his patients. I remember fondly how he expressed how much he loved being a doctor and never had plans to retire. He said, "I am lucky, I love what I do." And it showed.
He was greatly respected by his peers in medicine. Often when patients of his were seen by others, that physician and nurse, and yes, medical student as well, would say, "Oh! You're Dr. Coughlin's patient." And that meant something. Somehow, it always raised the bar for treatment his patients received from other professionals. And this would always be followed-up by, "I am will be sure to get the report to him, as he will be calling for it, if I don't." And he would.
His patients always felt like there were the most important thing in his life at that moment when they went into his office to see him. He'd entered the room ... "There's my girl, how are you?" No matter how ill, that always brought a smile to your face.
He'd listened. And if you were ill, you got in to see him. It was never, ever, "We can see you in a couple weeks, months, etc." It was that day. He made the time for you. And no matter how busy he was, he never showed it to his patients, he was glad he could help them. He did not discard anything you told him. He always said, "I would rather follow-through and not miss anything, than to think, if only, I had done this." He often said, I never ever want to have to think that about any of my patients. And as a patient, we never worried that he didn't care or that we didn't matter, as we all knew we did to him.
As a former patient, and friend, I will miss him, as much for his humor and stories, but also for his knowledge and medical care. Through the years I have referred countless number of friends and people in general to him. No one was ever disappointed that he was their doctor. I doubt I will ever have another Doctor like him. I know I haven't found one yet. I, like many others, have been searching for someone with his winning combination of his passion for life and people, and compassion for his patients. I and other are all struggling to find that combination in a doctor, I - we - haven't found one yet.
May there come a time for all of us, that our memories of him will bring a huge smile to our face and a warm feeling in our hearts and know how lucky we were that he was a part of our lives.
