COREY MENDOZA Obituary

June 1, 1955 -
November 11, 2018

Corey was born June 1, 1955 in New York City to Daniel and Bette Marlene "Marte" (Baker) Mendoza.

He passed away unexpectedly from a cardiac arrest on November 11, 2018 at Skagit Valley Hospital surrounded by family and friends.

Corey graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1973, Skagit Valley College in 1975 and from the University of Washington School of Business in 1977. "Go Dawgs".

After graduating with a CPA degree his career started as an accountant in Seattle and Bellingham. He has spent the majority of his career as a financial advisor in Mount Vernon, most recently with partners: Jeff Stewart and Jen Bright at Baird Private Wealth Management.

Corey was a man of integrity and believed in giving to his community. He was a member of the Mount Vernon-Skagit Rotary Club, Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation, Skagit Valley College Foundation, Past-President of the Skagit Golf and Country Club, Mount Vernon/Skagit Charitable Association, a member of the Skagit Valley College Hall of Fame, supported Skagit Valley Special Olympics, United Way Golfers Against Cancer Chairman and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He did not talk about his accomplishments, however those made him the person he is.

He loved sports of any kind. He bled Purple and Gold as a faithful HUSKY fan and was a season ticket holder, GO DAWGS. He was a boating enthusiast, his boat "The Nautilust" was well known in the waters of Puget Sound and Friday Harbor. He loved betting the Pony's and went yearly to Las Vegas for the March Madness Tournament. He had so much FUN crabbing with friends. He was "Uncle Corey" to many of the children of friends and spent hours attending their sporting events. Friends were the most important part of Corey's life. He has touched many lives in a strong way.

Corey and Jyl resided in their beautiful home they built overlooking Skagit Bay and Camano Island. The home was open to social events of many kinds. Corey enjoyed parties - having them, attending them, just having family and friends together was his enjoyment.

Corey is survived by his longtime partner, Jyl Bruns; mother: Marte Mendoza; brother: Danny (Linda) and their children: MacKenzie and Meghan, brother: Kevin (Judy) and their children: Breana and Brandon; uncles: Jay (Vonn) Baker and Joe Mendoza; great-nephew and nieces: Emmit, Eulabee and June.

He was preceded in death by his father: Daniel R. Mendoza in 2010.

A Celebration of Corey's life will be held Friday, November 16, 2018, 4:00PM at the Skagit Valley Inn and Convention Center (the old Cottontree Inn) 2300 Market St., Mount Vernon. Please come dressed in your best Husky or Jimmy Buffett attire!

Corey was our broker when we lived in Mount Vernon.

What I remember best about him was his smile. He had a wicked sense of humor and loved life. It's hard to imagine Mount Vernon without him.

Fins up, Corey. You remain my favorite Land Shark.

Our deepest condolences to the family on your loss. Liz and I are so very sorry. Forced to say goodby brings up many emotions and memories. Though he sees death daily our loving Father is not insensitive. Feeling our pain he provides strength and comfort, and assures that the dead will live again in a new world where death pain and sorrow will be no more.....
.......... and so we wait patiently on our great God to reunite us with our loved ones that we are missing so much........

We were shocked and saddened to hear the news of Corey's passing. He was a great friend to have growing up and every time one of us came back to Mt. Vernon it was so nice pleasure to get a chance to visit with him. The MV community was graced by his presence and leadership. We are sure that Mick and Mary Alice welcomed him into heaven's Tyee club and that they will all be watching the games together. Go Dawgs!

Our thoughts, prayers and sincere sympathy to the Mendoza family from the Jones family. His sweet, wonderful grandfather, Everett Baker, married our sweet, wonderful grandmother Laveta Jones, and brought him, and resto of that great family in our lives. We didn't get to spend a lot of time with Corey over the years, but the few times we met him, he impressed us with the same qualities that we so admired in his grandfather - love, kindness, empathy, charity, thoughtfulness, and a wicked sense of humor. Our family is truly saddened to hear of his loss, and wanted his family to know that he touched all of our lives in unforgettable, positive ways and we all should be so fortunate as to make that kind of impression on others. With great love and fond memories, Kerri (Jones) Adair on behalf of Darrel & Mary Jones, Kevin & Tyler Jones, Steve Jones & Illa Gilbert Jones, and my dear husband Kyle and sweet son Nick. Go DAWGS and let's all have a Margarita and a cheeseburger and toast this great man's all too short life.

Reading everyone's comments brings tears to my eyes, we all share the same feelings about Corey, he was loved by many, myself included. In 2 hours there will be a room filled with purple, gold and parrot heads, celebrating our beloved Corey! I will be there in spirit with a coconut bra on and Jimmy Buffet on my playlist!

Jamie and I were honored to have our lives enhanced by Corey over the past thirty years. He was a model of what it means to be a friend, always thinking of others and showing true interest in others lives. He will be missed. However, heaven is enhance by Coreys entrance. Dont be surprised if he greets us all at the gates of heaven.

Dear Marte, Jyl and Family - I am just heartbroken. I still remember the first time I met Corey in our 4th grade class at Washington Elementary. We have been part of the same crew of friends for over 50 years. So many fun and wonderful times. So many tragedies and heartbreaks. Corey has always been one of my favorite people. I am so glad I got to spend time with him when I was in town in August. I won't be there for his service on Friday but you will all be in my thoughts.

Jyl and the entire Mendoza family,
We are so sorry for your profound loss. Corey was such a quality person in every way. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word. He never met a stranger, especially if they were wearing purple and gold! We had so many fun times with Corey at Husky football games, tailgating on his boat and in his motorhome.
We'll never watch another Husky basketball game without first looking for Corey in his seats in the first row. We enjoyed catching up with him in the Stanwood area each summer and will miss Corey and his friendship tremendously. Our good memories will stay with us forever.
We are out of town and unable to attend his memorial on Friday. We send our love and will be with all of you in our thoughts and prayers.

I feel happy to have had a wonderful conversation with him recently when we were both running errands and met at the hardware store--it was a great catch up and as always, I felt uplifted from sharing laughter and great memories.

The husky football experience and a little part of me will never be the same. Corey and I shared a common passion as sports fans as well as having a very strong passion for the huskies. I will be forever grateful to Corey for the all the invites to the UW games, the bus trips to the games, and all the text messaging back and forth sharing our joy or frustrations as fans concerning the huskies, as well as anything else that was on our mind. Most importantly, I am honored to have called cory my friend and classmate for the past 50+ years, I always knew Corey had my back and was in my corner, always loyal to his fellow classmates and life time friends. I have a ton of great memories growing up with Corey as kids as well as throughout adult hood. RIP Cory, I cant believe you are gone, I wanted more, you will be so dearly missed, you were loved by many of us, god bless you!...Go Huskies!
