John Slostad Obituary

Mount Vernon - It is with heartfelt remembrance that we celebrate the life of John Slostad, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. A hardworking commercial fisherman, John spent his days braving the Alaskan waters under the motto: "Stick and stay and make it pay." He always embodies a resilient spirit and an unwavering work ethic. He was also an exceptional storyteller, sharing tales that sparked laughter and sometimes eyerolls and cringes among family and friends.

A kind and loving father, John was proud of his children, Kirstin Curtis and Tyler Slostad, and found immense joy in his five grandchildren, who truly lit up his life. His generous nature extended beyond his family to everyone he knew, always interested in who you were and what you had to share.

John was an avid skier, known for his wide Cadillac turns across the hill, demonstrating his love for the Mount Baker Ski Area. When he retired from fishing he decided to learn the upright bass. He became a talented bluegrass bass player, filling the air with melodies that reflected his warm and vibrant spirit. Wherever he was, he created a strong community of friends, whether skiing, fishing, or playing music.

John will be dearly missed but fondly remembered for his kindness, pride, and genuine interest in others. He is survived by his beloved spouse, Marlies Slostad, his children, Kirstin and Tyler, and his five grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, September 12th, 2025, at Hillcrest Park Lodge in Mount Vernon, WA, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Friends and family are invited to gather, share memories, and honor his remarkable life.

Rest in peace, Dad. Your legacy of love, laughter, and adventure will forever remain in our hearts.

Yesterday

I had a few Raniers with John during the summer months 1971-1977 in the Arctic bar or Sally´s 108 on occasion. I fished on the Barbra B´s sister ship, the Mary Louise B, so we often traveled "north" together and fished the same spots. I loved John´s grit and sense of humor. He was a seiners seiner. I actually worked for him in 1977 after I arrived late in Ketchikan after taking the California bar exam and he took on a seventh man to give me a job and a final season before marriage and 47 years of practicing law. Thanks for the great memories. RIP, my friend.

John & I both worked at Skagit Steel in Sedro Woolley after High School and and took turns driving. John had just bought a new Honda 500 Motorcycle. When he picked me up in the morning on his day to drive, I had to hold our lunch pails while John drove the bike. I'll never forget those rides with John. Rest in peace my friend.

John was a good friend and classmate of mine. He was a great athlete at Mount Vernon high class of 1962. He over came a broken leg that occurred in his sophomore year and in his senior year got "all northwest league" honors as a lineman. Later he won first place in the state wrestling championships in the heavyweight division and led our team to 1st place in state. John also had a heart of gold and was liked by everyone who knew him. Sorry we lost him.

Sorry to hear about John´s passing. I still remember making him dance with me in high school because he was so funny, and also light on his feet. Thinking of you all. Sara Seward
