Malcolm "Mac" Madenwald M.D. obituary, 1939-2025, Skagit, WA

Malcolm Madenwald Obituary

Skagit - Mac loved life to the full: he loved his family, his friends, his sailboat Pangaea and especially his wife, Wendy.

He often said his life was in 30 year segments. Born in '39, started medical practice in '69 and retired in '99.

Mac was born in Seattle but spent his early years in Oregon attending elementary school in Portland and one year of high school, before transferring to Myrtle Creek and finally graduating from Bellingham High School. Never one to miss a party, Mac faithfully attended all his class reunions.

Mac completed his pre-med undergraduate degree at Western Washington University then went on to Medical School at University of Washington. He interned at Cornell followed by an Orthopedic Residency at UW. He loved and thorougly enjoyed practicing orthopedic surgery in Skagit, Island and San Juan counties for 30 years. A highlight for him were his volunteer and secular trips with Orthopedics Overseas, working on behalf of USAID and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). He went to Afghanistan five times and once to Mozambique taking care of landmine injuries and teaching local medical personnel.

Mac served on the Boards of Skagit County Medical Bureau, NW Medical Bureau, Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland (SPF) and as Commodore of the Anacortes Yacht Club.

In '99 Mac shifted into the 'dessert stage' of life. In retirement he enjoyed many sailing adventures, winter ski trips and extensive international travel, frequently taking the road less traveled. An avid sailor since college days, he raced and cruised his beloved 39' sailboat Pangaea for over 47 years. Well-known to local and regional sailors throughout the Pacific NW, he also competed in three Vic-Maui races and the Sydney-Hobart race. His sailing legacy will continue with Nick Estvold at the helm and the extensive 'Pangaea Family' aboard.

He is survived by his wife, and sailing, skiing and travel buddy, Wendy. By daughter Tamra and son Marc and three grandchildren Clara, Yarrow and Heath. He was immensely proud of his family and their many achievements, both personal and professional.

A celebration of Mac's life will be at the Anacortes Yacht Club on July 26 - a party he will hate to miss.

Memorials may be made to Fred Hutch, SPF, Skagit Land Trust or San Juan Preservation Trust.

I remember caring for his patients as an RN at UGH and SVH. He was great to work with, his patients did great too. So glad he had an amazing retirement. Condolences to the family, he was a good man.

Mac was a gentleman and a gentle man. I adored working with him. His sense of humor always carried the day. One of my favorite memories is after winning a ride for the weekly race aboard his lovely boat, my young son went to the dock with me. As I boarded and reminded him to go straight home, Mac said,"No way.. Come here young man." He put Des right in front of him and took him with us against some of the crews wishes. My son loved it as did I. We got our small sailboat years later and Des loved sailing and grew quite competent. So very sorry for the family's loss of such a fine and loving man. The world is a better place for having had him here. He has earned his rest!

One of the truly fine, genuine, and kind people. Mac was everybody´s friend and never had a bad word for anyone. His love and spirit will be among us July 26.
