Dick (sometimes called Bergie) was born in Everett, Washington, the son of Anna and Clarence "Click" Bergeson.
The family moved to Anacortes in 1943, when Dick was in the seventh grade, and he graduated with AHS, Class of '48! He was very active in basketball, the Anacortes Seahawks team competing at State level, three out of four years.
After graduating, Dick attended LSU for two years and also did commercial fishing in Alaska.
On October 2, 1951, he enlisted in the US Army, serving as Radio Operator for two years in Korea. He received the Korean Service Medal, The United Nations Service Medal and Combat Infantry Badge.
Following his honorable discharge, Dick worked at Peoples Bank of Anacortes. In 1955, he began his career with Shell Oil Company as they began production, being a Personnel Accountant.
Retiring June 1, 1987, as Senior Employee Relations Analyst, Dick then continued for three more years, contracting for Shell Oil, counseling retirements locally, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska.
Dick met Louella "Lou" Schorno in 1956, as she became the Shell Oil Refinery Receptionist and Switchboard Operator. They were married on November 10, 1961 and lived in west Mount Vernon. They were blessed with two children, Bob and Linda. He loved his family and his many friends, having fun together, playing cards or pool, and many parties in their rec-room.
He was a sports fan, loved the challenge of a golf match, being very good at it and earned two "holes-in-one". He also played softball, billiards, shuffleboard and bowling. Dick and Lou had season tickets for UW Huskies, Mariners and Seahawks, attending most games until late 90's.
Dick was a Life Member of Elks and enjoyed gathering at the Anacortes Elks Club on Tuesdays and Thursday mornings with long-time buddies, swapping stories, jokes and solving world problems, also sharing coffee, tea, donuts and cookies. He was well liked, with his quick wit and good humor.
Dick and Lou enjoyed many cruises. They also enjoyed visiting their second favorite island Kauai (Fidalgo Island being their #1 favorite!) going most every year since 1977.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents Anna and Click Bergeson, his grandson: Danny Bergeson and his brother: Jim Bergeson.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lou Bergeson; his son: Bob Bergeson; daughter: Linda Bergeson; grandsons: Kenneth Gunter and Chris Hill; his great-grandsons: Chase and Rylee.
Thank you to Dick's loving family of care-givers at the Anacortes Lighthouse Memory Care, who eased his life for the past two years. Being multi-taskers, they helped greatly with his inability of getting around for much movement.
Services for Dick will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, February 23, 2018 at Evans Funeral Chapel of Anacortes, followed by graveside ceremony, with military honors at Fernhill Cemetery. A Reception for the guests to follow at Evans Funeral Chapel.
Memorials may be sent to the Anacortes Elks Club in support of their many charities.
Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel of Anacortes, WA.
