I am so sorry to read of the passing of Miss Lee. She was my 4th grade teacher at Crown Hill Elementary in Seattle, in the early 1970's. I believe I learned more useful information and skills that I still use today from her than from any other teacher. (With the possible exception of Mr Herb Sargo of Burlington.) Miss Lee (She will ALWAYS be Miss Lee to me) instilled in me a love of reading, by reading to us every day. I have purchased some of the books she read to us so I could enjoy them again. 4 Wagons West, The Story of Walt Disney, The Secret Garden. She put so much personality into her reading, it was almost as if we were seeing a movie. She would get us all started on writing the alphabet in cursive, each letter over and over. As she read, somehow she could look at our papers as she passed slowly up and down each aisle. When she felt like a student had mastered a letter she would tap the desk, signalling that we could go on to the next letter. We also did this with Roman Numerals. She gave us a lot of tips and tricks to remember rules in English, counting by the numbers - 3,6,9,12,15 etc. That helped me master multiplication. She was fond of spelling baseball, or math baseball. She taught us about poetry.
My family moved to Burlington after 5th grade (with Miss Ward). Imagine my surprise when I ran into her years ago at the Festival of Trees at the Fairgrounds in Mount Vernon! She knew my name! I was grown up with a daughter! We had a lovely visit, and somehow continued bumping into each other and then reminiscing. She always had her camera with her too.
I did not know much about Miss Lee, thank you for sharing her story in the obituary. I apologize for the length of this memory but I hope other students will read it and go back to a time in our lives where Miss Lee helped make us who we are today. And I hope family and friends will enjoy a story showing her educational impact on her students. I am grateful for her dedication to teaching. Her light will shine for generations.
