Val M. Matthews

1940 - 2025

Bow - Val was born June 1940 in Astoria ,Oregon to Arthur and Vivian Matthews. He was their firstborn, followed by a sister , Renee, and a brother, Mike.

He spent his childhood in the small community of Ocean Park, on the Long Beach Peninsula in southwest Washington. He attended grade school in Ocean Park, high school in Ilwaco, and one year at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington.

Val spent most of his working life creating with his hands and brain The first few years he worked as a union carpenter. After building his own home, he chose to do small remodels, build furniture or any odd job that came his way, rather than work at a job where time was money and where he might be asked to cut a corner. His skill and perfectionism brought him constant work without advertising. He was an avid "car guy" and along with friends formed the North Cascade Street Rod Association, and participated in many family oriented events. He was also a member of the Northwest Corner Woodworkers. He shared his knowledge by teaching woodworking skills to small groups. Additionally, he lead a group in making "Toys for Tots".

Spare time activities included, skiing, running, hiking, canoeing, motorcycling, building cars, and fixing anything that needed it. He loved music, art, and the great outdoors. But most of all he loved his children.

Val leaves behind on extended family that will miss him dearly, three children, Brad, Angel, and Leo, one grandchild, Justin, Two stepsons, Ben (deceased), and Bob, Two ex-wives, Carol and Avelia, and his present, wife Laura Matthews (nee Benson).

The family wants to extend its gratitude to all the caring staff at United General Oncology Department for their loving care and friendship. He fought a three year battle with cancer and succumbed after a brief stay in the hospital on August 27, 2025. One and all are invited to a celebration of life at his home on the 27th of September at 1 o'clock.
