Robert Patrick was a cousin; his father and my Canadian grandmother were siblings. My sister and I met him in 2019, going to visit him on his 90th birthday, as we were doing genealogy.

Mr. McCormick was one of the best teachers I had in high school. He taught me so much beyond the three years of Latin at Carlmont. I had the privilege of visiting him whenever I returned to California for various reunions. Despite his insistence, I could never call him by his first name. Both Mr. Deegan and Mr. McCormick are gone now, and I hope that they are still enjoying the company of each other. Both were a true inspiration for me. Farewell my friends.

We called him "Bouncing Baby Bobby Blue-Eyes" behind his back at Carlmont High School, where he taught me 4 years of German. By the fourth year, we were reading German literature in Gothic script. He was one of my touchstones in a career (1968-2020) that offered me the chance to work in over 50 countries. May he rest in peace, and in the power of his ability to expand my imagination.
