Selma Malk

1914 - 2017

La Jolla Selma Malk, at the age of 103, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2017, surrounded by her family. She was born on March 28, 1914 in Cape Town, South Africa, to Gus and Anne Woolf. After completing her education, she married William Malk and raised two children, Ann (married name Lipschitz) and Brian Malk, in Johannesburg, South Africa.After her husband's' death, Selma moved to southern California at the age of 71, to be near her two adult children and her four grandchildren. For 32 years, Selma thoroughly enjoyed living at the La Valencia.Although Selma had never worked outside the home while living in South Africa, she was determined to find employment in the San Diego area. Until the Soup Plantation in La Jolla closed its doors, Selma worked as a hostess. After that job ended, she worked as a volunteer greeter at the Birch Aquarium, in addition to volunteering at the Athenaeum and the Mingei International Museum. Selma always loved new experiences, and these jobs fulfilled a part of her.Selma is survived by her two children, Ann Lipschitz and Brian Malk; four grandchildren, Marc and Lisa Lipschitz, Simon and Andrew Malk; and seven great- grandchildren.Always the fashion plate, Selma, with her larger than life personality, smiling face, and her positive attitude, is gone, but will not be forgotten!
