Allen James Hoey

1939 - 2018

Allen James Hoey, age 79, of Drummond Island, Michigan, passed peacefully at home October 30, 2018. He was born January 9, 1939, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Leo G. and Frances Olga (Bucy) Hoey.
Allen grew up in Dexter, Michigan, where he graduated from high school with the Class of 1957. He served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959, then returned to Dexter and ran the construction side of the family business D.E. Hoey & Sons. He was called back into the Army for a short time during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He moved to Drummond Island in 1978, where he owned and operated "The Little Store" for eight years. He worked at Domino's Lodge, as a carpenter, for a couple of years before starting his own construction company in 1987. He excelled in finish carpentry and retired in 2015.
Allen loved horses and was referred to as a "Horse Whisperer." He was a perfectionist who was well known for his meticulous manner in everything he did. Allen was an avid reader, history buff, and was a good listener who knew his community well. Allen enjoyed spending time with family, friends and his beloved horses.
Allen is survived by his wife Tess, two daughters, Michelle (Mark Fenlon) Hoey of Pickford, Michigan, and Joyce (Rob) Anderson of Drummond Island; and three grandchildren, Colton Bucht, Tyler (Katie) Anderson, and Alyssa Anderson. He is also survived by three sisters, Rosalie (Pat) McCarthy of Naples, Florida, Martha Lee (Robert) Schneider of Indian River, Michigan, and Rita (Ted) Barnes of Ann Arbor; two brothers, Daniel (Marlene) Hoey of Ann Arbor and Burton Hoey of Dexter.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, James Hoey; and brother, Patrick Hoey.
Services will be held Saturday, November 3, at St. Florence Catholic Church on Drummond Island. A gathering time will be held from 11 a.m. to noon followed by a Memorial Mass at noon, conducted by Father Jose Cherian, Celebrant.
Interment will be in Drummond Island Township Cemetery.
