I knew Dan since he was a customer on my paper route when I was 14 years old (46 years ago). Then he was a regular customer/friend of the owners at the East End Hardware where I worked as a teenager. Back in the day we would go 4 wheeling (which meant trucks back then) together. Later he and I purchased an old Ford wrecker. He was the other M in M&M automotive, the business I ran for many years. He and I were good friends of Clarence Lindberg's from WITI, where we both studied mechanics, only years a part. Clarence was a mentor to many and actually bought adjoining property to Dan on the 22 road outside of Superior, WI. Our friend, Don, reminded me recently that Dan called where he lived on the 22 road the banana belt. Always was warmer there than in Superior.
When Dan moved to the Twin Cities, he recruited me and Don to help move his belongings including a solid wood butcher block -- in an ice storm -- and I was the lucky one who "got" to drive.
While in the cities he owned Auto Tow wrecker service and McLean small engine. We utilized his tow service on one occasion. He worked for Greyhound bus two different times and once sent me a snowblower on the bus. He also worked for the Metro Transit Commission.
He had the patience of a saint for our spirited daughter when she was a toddler and got overheated. I remember him carrying her around at the MN zoo. The kids really enjoyed his dog, Harley D, which he cared for as if it were his own child. Harley, was one of many dogs Dan had and loved, since I've known him.
He had been riding along in the backseat on my adventures, as he called it, for a couple years now. He always enjoyed seeing new places. He went along to Italy with my wife this past fall and especially wanted to see Italian menus. Most recently, he could only answer my emails occasionally.
As our son would say he always had a good story. He always had good wit and humor. He was never afraid to say what he meant or to take a chance. Dan and and my wife shared many a bag of pistachios. Dan loved a good steak and BBQ. He was the only person I knew who loved fruit cake. I once bought him a gift certificate to the Sunday buffet at JAX in Minneapolis and he talked the waitress into a doggy bag from the dessert table.
I knew all 3 of his wives and Lyn and he were the best together. Thanks to her for loving and taking care of him all these years. I'm sorry she didn't get more years with him. Glad he is in His Happy place.

I'm sorry for the loss of your loved one. My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
