Betty Polman Obituary


June 23, 1930 - Aug. 29, 2012 NOTRE DAME - Becky Polman, 82, a longtime South Bend resident, died in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on August 29, 2012, at Heartland Health Center where she resided for the past 7 years. She was born in South Bend, Indiana, in 1930, to Harold and Merle Becker. She graduated from Riley High School in 1948. She attended Memorial School of Nursing graduating in 1951. She married Louis J. Polman Jr. on June 7, 1952, at Sacred Heart Basilica. He preceded her in death in January 1994. Together they had 4 children, Nancy (William) Phelan and Linda Polman, both of whom reside in Cincinnati, Ohio, Patti Polman, who resides in Denver, Colorado, and Louis J. Polman III, who resides in Osceola, Indiana. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Amy, Billy, Andrea, Dana, Willa, and one great-grandson, Landon James. She was Director of Nursing for Upjohn Homemakers. She was a staff nurse at the Notre Dame Infirmary and eventually worked as a nurse at St. Mary's College Student Health Center. She concluded her nursing career facilitating at Shamrock Gardens Retirement Center. Upon her retirement she volunteered at Sacred Heart Basilica where she gave guided tours and was an avid Notre Dame fan throughout her life. She was cremated at Howard Price Funeral Home in North Palm Beach, Florida. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 15, 2012, at 10 a.m. in the Crypt of Sacred Heart Basilica. Family and friends may arrive at the crypt one hour before the funeral Mass. The interment ceremony will be at St. Joseph Valley Cemetery following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Memorial Health Foundation at www.qualityoflife.org/foundation for nursing education.
