Janet Ferraro Obituary

Janet S. Ferraro

Oct. 23, 1946 - Sept. 13, 2016

SOUTH BEND - Janet S. Ferraro, 69, passed away peacefully in her home September 13, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born October 23, 1946, to Rebecca (Cohen) Kaplan and Joe Mermelstein.

On January 7, 1967, Janet married her best friend, Louis J. Ferraro, Jr. He survives her. She is also survived by her daughter, Tammy (John) Moody of Vestal, NY; mother, Rebecca Kaplan of Indianapolis; granddaughter, Janey Moody of Vestal, NY; brother, Gary (Margo) Mermelstein of Austin, TX; sister, Gayle (Trey) Cannon of Zionsville, IN; mother-in-law, Betty Ferraro of South Bend; and brother-in-law, Dale (Jan) Ferraro of LaPorte.

Janet was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Janey, who was her only grandchild and light of her life, affectionately named her “Grika.” She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing pool and was the League Operator of the Bleacher's In House Pool League. She also loved flowers, all kinds and colors. She will be remembered for her cute comments, including on pool night, she would say, “It's 7:00, get a game on the table - there's weather coming!” She will be dearly missed.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4-8 PM with a short prayer service at 4 PM at the McGann Hay, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Rd., South Bend, IN. The Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 AM at Christ the King Catholic Church, Rev. Michael Belinsky, CSC, Associate Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.

Tammy & Family,
I cannot imagine how difficult the last week has been for you. Please know that thoughts and prayers are with you all as you struggle with the loss of a woman that I never met, but felt I knew from all your WW stories. The past two days you, Janey, and your father have been on my mind. What a sad few days indeed. I hope that today opens a new chapter in your lives and that family and friends allowed for many a smile, a song or two, and a few Grika stories to be told. She'll live forever in your hearts - watching over and guiding you all.

We are never ready to let go of those we love. We are left with their teachings, love and years of memories from life experiences. Janet was a wonderful Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Relative and/or Friend! Soft-spoken, generous and kind fit Janet like a glove. I will miss you my sweet cousin and our long phone conversations. Blessings, Strength and Love to Aunt Binnie, Gary, Gayle, Lou, Tammy and Janie.

First and foremost my condolences to the family. Lou, prayers and thoughts are with you! I had the pleasure of serving Janet at Bleachers. She always made me smile and always made sure she dealt with me so she could tip me. She is an amazing woman full of surprises! I love her spirit! II am so glad to have had the pleasure of meeting an angel on this earth. Gone but never forgotten. God bless.

I had the honor to be pool teammates with Janet many times and we always had so much fun. She was a great team player and very loyal. She could play safeties like crazy and wear you down by attrition. I will miss her very much, but will never forget her. Love you Janet! My hearts and prayers go out to her family.

We lost our beautiful sister Janet Ferraro way too soon! She put up a good fight but lost her battle with cancer Tuesday afternoon.
She was a wonderful person with a huge heart who always cared for and did so much for others before herself. On our last visit the main thing she worried about as I held her hand was if our mother was going to be alright. She was at peace with what was happening and said that she had no regrets. She had a full life, a great marriage to a wonderful man, (who took such good care of her to the very end), and a daughter and granddaughter she loved very much and who made her so proud! Lots of great memories of my big sister! Maybe she and my daddy will have a chance for another Jitterbug! I love you Sis! You will be greatly missed!

So manty times at her house we'd sing while Binnie played the piano. We didnt have much back then but we had each other..there was a group of us and we always ended up at Janets house.
