GRANGER, IN - Mr. Jesse James Hampton, 85, went home to be with the Lord on the evening of Wednesday, August 22 at The Hearth at Juday Creek. Jesse was born on March 14, 1933 in Little Rock, Arkansas to James and Lonnie Hampton.

Jesse resided in Granger for the last 32 years, spending much of his early life in Chicago. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and was faithfully employed as a rural carrier for the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1982 after 34 years of dedicated service. On November 16, 2002, Jesse was united in marriage to Brenda (Jackson) Hampton, who survives. Jesse faithfully served the Lord and attended Faith Baptist Church where he volunteered his time for many years at the church food pantry, where he served formerly as the director. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame football and proudly cheered on his nephews: running back Danny Knott, who was playing for ND when they won the National Championship in 1977, and currently his great-nephew, defensive lineman Johnathon Bonner. In his retirement, he loved to go to auctions and garage sales, playing cards, being a jokester and spending time with family. Jesse was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be missed by all who knew him.

Jesse is survived by his wife of 15 years, Brenda Hampton; daughters, Angela Picz of Phoenix, Arizona and Sherrie Bynum of Indianapolis, IN; son, John Bynum of Raleigh, NC; his “adopted” children, Charles (Melissa) White of South Bend, IN; two grandchildren, Xavier and Nicole; a special niece, Consuelo “Sue” Hampton; as well as a host of brothers and sisters in Christ, extended family, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and nine siblings.

Services for Jesse James Hampton will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, August 27 at Faith Baptist Church, 1002 Blaine Avenue, South Bend, IN 46616. Friends may call on the family for visitation for one hour prior to services at the church. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to Faith Baptist Church Food Pantry.
