Joan M. Webber Dec. 22, 1930 - April 13, 2015 SOUTH BEND - "Gentle woman, quiet light, morning star, so strong and bright, gentle mother, peaceful dove, teach us wisdom, teach us love." Joan Marie (Chrobot) Webber passed away early Monday morning, April 13, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her family, and is finally at peace after her battle with cancer. Though her death was difficult, we know by her selflessness and faith that never has such a loving soul passed more easily from this life to the next. Joan was born on December 22, 1930, in South Bend, to Marie (Wroblew-ski) and Henry Chrobot. She was the oldest of three siblings, taking on the responsibilities of second mother after her father died when she was only 8 years old. She attended school at Saint Adalbert's and South Bend Catholic, graduating in 1949. While in high school, she worked at the A&P on the Westside, where she met Charles L. Webber, and later worked at South Bend Electric before starting her family. Joan and Charlie married on Oct. 28, 1950. Joan's life revolved around her family--her mother and brothers, her husband, and especially her 10 children, 24 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. She spent countless hours at recitals, performances, and school and athletic events in support of her children and grandchildren, traveling with Charlie across Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan, Maine, Tennessee, and Georgia. Joan thoroughly enjoyed dancing the polka at family weddings; a good game of euchre after holiday dinners; cooking her specialties of pot roast, fried chicken, potato salad, chocolate sheet cake and apple crisp; and her monthly gatherings with a special group of high school girlfriends for over 60 years. She was a longtime communicant of Christ the King Catholic Church and found time to volunteer at a local shelter and to make sandwiches for the homeless. She was known as "Grandma Webber" to many neighborhood children and, later, their children. Her house was always full of her children's friends, her nieces and nephews, and many others, and they were always welcome to raid her refrigerator or sit at her kitchen table. She was a good neighbor, a loyal friend, and a loving wife and mother. Joan is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband of over 64 years, Charlie; her brother, Henry Chrobot; her children and their spouses: Sharon & Michael Poulin of Lewiston, Maine; Chuck & Nancy Webber of Bloomington, Indiana; Linda Webber (widow of Eric Webber) of South Bend; Therese & Joel Hoff of South Bend; David Webber of South Bend; Kurt & Alicia Webber of South Bend; Gregg & Janet Webber of Cumming, Georgia; Lisa & Paul Kahler of West Bloomfield, Michigan; Mike Webber & Mike Smith of Ogden Dunes, Indiana; and Anne & Jeff Miller of Granger, Indiana; her grandchildren and their spouses: Charles, Mathieu, and James Poulin; Beth (Webber) & Marty Shrader, Chad, and Kimi Webber; Elise Webber and Ryan & Kari Webber; Alex, Nathan & Jillian, and Steven Hoff; Noah Webber; Zach, Jake, Veronica, Axel, and Madi Webber; Jordyn and Lexi Kahler; Trey, Grace, Elianna, and Caden Miller; and her great-grandchildren: Leonard Shrader, and Lucas, Sophie, and Emma Webber. She is welcomed into Heaven by her parents, her brother, Rev. Leonard F. Chrobot, her son, Eric, her granddaughter, Kaleigh Grace Miller, and her sister-in-law, Marylou Chrobot. The family would like to thank Dr. Bilal Ansari and the staff at Michiana Hematology Oncology and Dr. Michael Helms and his staff. We are forever grateful to her loving and compassionate care-givers, Lynette, Nicole, Heather, Megin, Ann, and Angela; our friend Ewa for her delicious home cooked meals; and her wonderful neighbors for their kindness and generosity. Viewing will take place from 2 7 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2015, at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 North Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a Parish Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Viewing will also take place from 10 -11 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2015, at Christ the King Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 am Monday, April 20, at Christ the King Church, 52473 State Road 933, South Bend. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, IN.
