John Czarny Obituary

John Czarny

May 5, 1925 - Jan. 22, 2016

NORTH LIBERTY - John was born in Zaluze, Poland. During WWII, while being held in a German concentration camp, John joined the American army and served in the B Battery “C” 977th Field Artillery Battalion. After the war ended, John was able to come to the United States and become a citizen. He was a true inspiration to anyone who knew him and his story. He persevered through extremely tough life experiences while in Germany, always holding strong in his faith, in prayer and his love of life. We chuckle at one of his favorite quotes: “I'm still alive!”

John worked as a grounds keeper for the University of Notre Dame for 10 years prior to becoming the sole maintenance man for Teamsters Local Union No. 364 for 50 years. He did it all during his tenure at Local 364. His Teamster family especially recalls the enjoyment it gave him to drive around on his tractor mowing grass in the summer and plowing snow in the winter. Tonight we shall fill our glasses with beer - Budweiser (your favorite) - in honor of you. Thank you for letting us adopt you into our family. God has truly blessed us in so many ways through sharing your life with us. Na zdrowie, dearest friend, with a special hug from Lilli Lynn.
