Mildred Bendit Obituary

SOUTH BEND - Mildred Jeanne Bendit, 85, of South Bend, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2016. She was born on January 18, 1931, in Miami Beach, Florida, to Ann (Bailey) and Garl Weller, and was adopted and raised by Florence (Carini) and Joe Roth. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Sister Ann Weller, CSJ, and Paul, Steven, and William Weller. Jeanne married the love of her life, Leon B. Bendit, on December 6, 1952, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka. He survives to cherish her memory along with their daughter, Deborah A. Carroll (Pat) of Niles, MI; son, David L. Bendit (Deb) of Landisville, PA; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marilyn Wilson (Jim) in Minnesota; and step-brother-in-law, Richard Schiffer of Cross Village, MI.
Jeanne graduated from Mishawaka High School and St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as an RN at St. Joseph Hospital. When she retired from nursing, she worked for many years for South Bend Community School Corporation as a secretary and a teacher's aide.
She was active in the lay ministry at St. Therese, Little Flower Catholic Church, serving as a gift bearer at Mass, counting collections, working in the food pantry and providing food for funeral lunches. She and Leon also delivered Meals on Wheels for over 20 years.
Jeanne loved her family and especially cherished spending wonderful vacations with them. She also enjoyed camping, sailing, canoeing, hiking, playing the organ, sewing, and playing Euchre.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Monday, August 15, 2016, at St. Therese, Little Flower Catholic Church, at 54191 N. Ironwood, South Bend, IN 46635. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, August 14, from 2-4 pm at the church, or Monday, August 15, from 10-11 am prior to the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the church may be made in Jeanne's memory.

Mr. Bendit and The Bendit Family,
What a sudden and sad loss of your wonderful wife Jeanne. The two of you did so many missions at Little Flower Church together, you truly live by example!
You raised your family here and Debbie and David have such wonderful families also.
I remember your friendship to my parents, John and Katie Shanley and our entire family. LF Corn and Sausage Roasts. working on committees. always serving at church, etc.
You certainly made our Mother's last birthday so special when you baked a cake for her and plant for her present.
We will always remember you as the loving gifts you are to all of us.

I just learned of Jeanne's passing and I was filled with much sadness. I remember so well the days we all worked together at Jackson. She was a wonderful lady and a friend to all. May God give you strength and peace.
