She was one of seven children of Gerald and Grace (Dalrymple) Proud. She grew up in Buchanan, graduating from Buchanan High School with the class of 1939. She married Robert U. Sherwood on Jan. 27, 1940, in Berrien Springs, and she had resided here since that time. She was an ambitious person; as well as being a homemaker she worked at the former Ranita Shop, then at Band Box Cleaners in Berrien Springs, and then went to work at the Simplicity Pattern Co. in Niles, working in the shipping department. She retired after 25 years of service. Natalie was very active with her children, serving as a Girl Scout leader and a den mother. She loved to quilt and made many quilts for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs baseball team and the Notre Dame football games. After retirement she and Robert would winter in Frostproof, FL, where she enjoyed the warmth, fishing and playing bingo with their friends at the clubhouse. They were members of the Rolling Shamrock Camping Club. With all the activities she was involved in, one of the most important was the Berrien General Hospital Auxiliary where she served as a volunteer and on the board for many years. Natalie is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann (Doug) Suave of Niles; a son, Robert (Sue) Sherwood of Statesboro, GA; four grandchildren, Michael (Vickie) Casner of Buchanan, Elizabeth (Robert) McIntyre of Niles, Karen (Robert) Willock of Coral Gables, FL, and Anne Marie (Andy) Aldred of Statesboro, GA; five great-grandchildren, Roland, Brandon, Lydia and Piper Willock, and Drew Aldred, and two brothers, Edward (Leona) Proud and Dale (Janice) Proud of Buchanan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, on March 5, 2001; a sister, Evelyn Nelson; and by three brothers, Russell, Richard and Lee Proud.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.
