SOUTH BEND - Walter Daniel De Baets, 79, passed away on Saturday, May 21st, 2016, at his home from natural causes.

Walter was born on May 18, 1937, in Eecloo, Belgium, (district Balgerhoeke) to the late Xaverus and Amanda (Van Zuyt) De Baets. Sister, Annie McGrogan, preceded him in death in 2006. He came to the U.S.A. by boat on May 13, 1949, at age 12. He was a United States Air Force veteran who served in the Korean War. He was an avid fisherman; he had a love for eagles with a beautiful collection that he cherished; he loved to drag race Jeeps & dune buggies at The Sodbusters' in his younger years; he was known for his famous ribs on the grill and most of all he loved his boxers, Philli & Misty. Some people knew my dad as Danny, others called him Wally, Walt or Belgie, but he was my Dad! Walter was a Teamster member at Local 364; he also served as Vice Commander for American Legion Post 161, and he was a current member of American Legion Post 357. Walter was employed by Preston Freight and had been retired since 1994.

Walter is survived by his only daughter, Lisa (Rob) Gordon of Mishawaka, a granddaughter, Amanda (Ryan) Kroll of South Bend, and great-granddaughters, Hailey & Adrianna Kroll. He is also survived by his ex-wife of 42 years, Mary Jane Lee De Baets, as well as two stepsons.

I am sure his lifelong friends, Phil & Ron, met him at the pearly gates and are onto their next adventure. Thanks goes to Janet, Tommy & Bob for always being there.

Per his wishes, my dad wanted to be cremated with no services, and as hard as it is, I am honoring his last request. Hahn Funeral Home is in charge of cremation and condolences may be made to lisagordon1967@yahoo.com.
