1934 - 2018

Frederick M. McDermott Jr., longtime resident of Brockton, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at age 84. He met and quickly fell in love with his wife, Barbara (Prosper) McDermott, while they attended Brockton High School. After graduating, Mr. McDermott enlisted in the United States Navy and admirably served on the USS Compton during the Korean War. Upon returning home he married his sweetheart, Barbara, and together they had three children. Starting as a linesman for New England Telephone Company, he rose through the ranks into a managerial position diligently working during the day and taking college courses at night, eventually obtaining a doctorate in adult education. When he retired from the telephone company, Mr. McDermott developed an educational system called Jims and Jabs and traveled the world in a training capacity for the military and numerous Fortune 500 companies. He was very proud of his Irish heritage. He was an accomplished baseball player and loved to coach and share his knowledge of the game. He enjoyed spending time working in his garden and especially enjoyed growing garlic and butternut squash and thoroughly appreciated the meals his wife cooked using the vegetables he grew. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; and their children, Frederick McDermott of Brockton, Mary Jane Asack and her husband George Asack Jr. of Bridgewater and Jeffrey McDermott of Brockton; adoringly known as "Bumpa" to his grandchildren, Alyssa Asack Rawlins and her husband Jason Rawlins, Jillian Asack and Ryan McDermott and his wife Katy McDermott, and his great-grandchildren, Olivia and Sophie Rawlins. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Lou Macrina and her husband George Macrina, and their five children, Joe, Patty, Paul, Ann and Nancy; brother-in-law to Patricia Sherman; and loving uncle to her three children, Beth, Susan and Melissa. Funeral from the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St. (Rte. 123), Brockton, on Monday at 9:30 a.m. thence to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 439 West St., Brockton, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton.
