John Poplasky Obituary

John S. James Poppy Poplasky, 78, originally from Southie, died peacefully, on the evening of Dec. 25, 2012, after a short and spirited battle with esophageal cancer. Born May 3, 1934, to the late Anna (Rapchinskas) and John F. Poplasky of South Boston, John was a graduate of Cathedral High School in South Boston and after being discharged from the Army, earned his bachelors degree from Northeastern University in Boston. He married Phyllis A. OLeary Sept. 23, 1961, and after living a few years in Quincy, they moved to their home in Weymouth, where they raised two children and lived the rest of his life. John worked as a grocery buyer and salesman for several different companies until his retirement in 2006, but spent most of his time caring for his loving wife Phyllis until her death, at home in 2007, from multiple sclerosis. John loved music of all kinds, cooking, old movies, and loved watching the Patriots (win or lose), the Red Sox and the Bruins. In recent years, he had begun to travel and loved seeing the world via cruise ship, with his family. He was the beloved husband of the late Phyllis Ann (OLeary) Poplasky; and brother of the late George Francis Poplasky. John is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Tracy Ann and David Brian McCarthy of Duxbury and Lisa Marie and John Eric Haapaoja of Weymouth. He is survived by five devoted grandchildren, David Jason McCarthy, Casey Marie McCarthy, Madison Rose McCarthy, all of Duxbury, Samantha Lynn (Haapaoja) Keenan and her husband John Keenan of Quincy, and Gregory James Haapaoja; and his longtime girlfriend, Jaime Rosenburg of Weymouth. He is survived by his devoted sister, Charlotte (Poplasky) Baker of Plymouth, the beloved wife of the late Edward Baker; nieces, Whitney, Cori and Mary and their families; and his sister-in-law, Helen (Cotter) Poplasky of Quincy, beloved wife of his brother, the late George F. Poplasky; nieces and nephew, Christina, Thomas and Mary and their families. He also leaves a brother-in-law, Harold Mahoney, beloved husband of the late Doris (OLeary) Mahoney, his nieces and nephew, Kyleanne, Daniel, Lynn and Jill and their families. John is also survived by dear cousin-in-law, Gail Poplaski, wife of his cousin, the late Joseph Poplaski, of North Reading, and their children, Michael, David and his wife Shannon, Amanda and Kevin. A funeral service will be held at the C.C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Square), South Weymouth, Saturday, Dec. 29, at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Johns memory to the VNA of Boston, Development Department, 500 Rutherford Ave. Charlestown, MA 02129.
