John Shillito Obituary

John Doug Shillito III, 54, of Duxbury, died peacefully at home, his wife Sue by his side, on June 20, 2017 after a courageous five-year battle with ALS. While the illness robbed Doug of nearly all-physical capabilities, including the ability to speak, it never dampened his quick wit, wry sense of humor, passion for cars, boats and love for the water or his devilish smile. Doug grew up in Chestnut Hill. He met Sue, the love of his life, in 1992. They married in 2001 and settled in Duxbury, where Doug and his family spent many childhood summers. Doug and Sue owned Cedarview Filling Station in Marshfield for 12 years and felt so welcomed and loved by the community. Many friends and family members also supported him throughout his battle. In addition to his wife Sue, Doug is survived by his mother, Bunny, his sisters Betsy Wagner and her daughter Rose, Laurie Shillito, brother Will Shillito and wife Jennifer. His father, Dr. John Shillito, preceded him in death. Private services will be held at a later date. Dear Sue,

Unfortunately Doug and I never kept in touch after I left Dexter at the end of seventh grade, and I have only recently learned about Doug's terrible illness and death.

At Dexter, Doug and I were really good friends. I remember our times together very fondly and have so many happy memories. From skating and playing hockey together, to hanging out at his house in Chestnut Hill to roaming The Country Club golf course in off-season with our wrist rocket sling shots, we had some great times together.

I especially remember that Doug was a great hockey player - a wonderful skater and skillful stick handler and shooter.

He was also the person who introduced me to skateboarding which we used to do on a rather terrifying hill near Dexter! As with most things athletic, he was much better than me, but he was terribly patient. He was truly a good friend.

Doug had a quiet confidence and a great sense of humor. It does not surprise me at all that he handled his illness with such grace and determination.

My deepest condolences to you and your family for your loss.

Dearest Sue and Doug's family,John and I are sooooo sorry for your loss. Doug was the kindest, sweetest, most gentle person anyone could be privileged enough to know. It is so hard to process the loss of Doug. We will always remember and cherish our times with Doug and the wild man, Duke. We will picture Duke greeting his beloved "Dad" with great joy with the two of them walking off into the sunset together, back together at last. Doug may have left his physical body but he will be in our hearts forever. He truly was an incredibly wonderful person who will be missed by all of those who loved him. Bless you all for the sterling care and love you showered on him these last three years. With our deepest sympathy and love, Susan Curtis and John Baldwin
